2003 Brake Replacement

I just took my car to the dealer yesterday and he told me that I need new brakes. I just got new brakes 2 months ago from the dealer for almost $300. Should I use someone to replace them cheaper or fork out the dough and go back to the dealer? i know a mechanic who could do it but I'm a little worried about using non-infiniti mechanics on my car.

I live in atlanta and we have a a lot of very bad traffic here so i don't think they're lying but i would definitely like to try a mechanic other than the dealership.

Unless you drive with your foot on the brake pedal, or race, there is no way even the old style pads would wear out that fast IMO!

Cant you look through the wheel to see for yourself how much meat is left on the pads? $300 every two months would force me to sell my G.

2 months on a set of pads....You can't drive in traffic for 2 months and wearout the pads...that is unless you are a leftfoot braker/brake dragger. I'm in Silicon we have the worst traffic in the county and no one has complained about having to have pads done in 2 months. Watch out and try an independent shop and don't tell them what the dealer told you just have them checked for squeaking and see what they say.

^^^^ What he said. Take it to someone else for a second opinion but don't tell them what the stealer said. It's strange that you would need new brakes that soon, unless they weren't installed correctly the first time. Good luck.

Are you positive they installed new brakes two months ago? I am amazed that you only made it two months on a set of brakes. Even I made it 15K mi on my two previous sets of brakes. Either way, I'd go somewhere else, if you're out of warranty, then why spend the extra cash at the dealer?

I think there is some miscommunication going on between him and the dealer, maybe they just checked the brakes two months ago, even someone I know with a G that rides the brakes got like 12k on the first pads.

You sure it's not:
Two months ago you change the front,
now you are changing the rear pads.

I'd say bring it to a local mechanic, i just dropped mine off this morning. Not sure how much it will cost but the dealer was going to charge me a little over $300. I think its about time to start looking for a repair manual for me so i can start learning how to do this stuff.

Abq, I think you’re correct, there has to be a miscommunication somewhere. Either you’re right and they merely checked the brakes two months ago or as what2do suggested, they changed the fronts and are now changing the back. I just don’t see how he could wear through a new set of brakes in 2 months—unless he put 15K mi on the car in that time period and somehow I doubt that’s the case!
