What oil to use? I know to switch to mobil 1 synthetic after 10K miles. Should I let dealer do it? I honestly dont trust those guys. thanks much!

interesting, i'm gonna follow the same routine for my g35 as i did for my 2k2 6spd max... Put in synthetic for break-in oil change... Maxima has 60k miles and still idles smoothly, and sometimes when in the car w/ ac off, it doesn't even feel like the engine is running...

my max has mobil1 synthetic in 5w-30 weight and been using oem filter since 1000 miles.... it's gone through at least 18 oil changes (18 oil filters and 90 plus quarts of oil) with all oil purchased from costco...

excuse my ingnorance. But i thought you re not supposed to use synthetic in beginning to allow valve rings to swell and engine to break in?
thanks for comments!

True, even if you use syn-blend the rings wont be able to seal. I think the guy was saying he started full syn after the 1000 mile break in.

Personally i started using full syn mobil 1 5W-30 after 2000 miles.

Talking Old Wives Tale

Guys, there is no need to wait a certain amount of miles to "break in" prior to using synthetic lubricants. None what so ever. Many manufactures ship their cars out of the factory filled with synthetic oil.

My company breaks in our $40,000 sprint car engines on a dyno with synthetic oil from the first time we start a new engine. We have never had a oil related failure, and have never seen any evidence of improper break in due to use of synthetic oil.

You can take the advise of someone who earns a living building and rebuilding engines, or you can listen to a web based wives tale.

What I do:

Keep regular manufacturers oil in for first 2000 miles.
Then put in synthetic blend for next 3000 miles.
Then at 5K miles use fully synthetic and change every 5K miles.
