G35 vs Impala SS 2003 (more G bait ?)
G35 vs Impala SS 2003 (more G bait ?)
Well i havent raced one yet, but i started seeing the commericals for it on tv. I checked the canadian chevy websites and apprently they wont be carrying them but in the US (lucky bastards) they will be carrying them. Well i have driven an impala LS before when the volvo was in the shop and id have to say it has lots of spunk. The new Impala SS boasts a supercharged 3.8L V6. On the site it says its listed at 240hp (fwd). Does this concern any G drivers here ? Does this mean the beginning of sedan wars ? or is this another rabbit for us wolves to eat ?
Re: G35 vs Impala SS 2003 (more G bait ?)
It's the same engine as the Pontiac Grand Prix. Knowing GM, I wouldn't be surprised if it's practically the same car. It's a FWD platform, as well.
The only Impala SS that impressed me was tha Caprice-based one that they discontinued in '96.
3.8L supercharged and less power than our 3.5. I'd be more worried about the new 3.6L NA engine GM has ready to go in the CTS next year - 255hp on 87 octane.

are you kidding me? It is a heavy boat of a car with a 240hp engine while we have a light rwd 260 hp car. The V6 Altima should destroy this car

But probably a crap-load more torque.
Which means that since it's wrong wheel drive, they're going to have trouble keeping the wheels from spinning off the line. And by the time they get hooked, your'll be a couple car lengths ahead and pulling away.
But just watch out if they change the blower pulley.

My bad. I think it was 240hp last year, I don't remember. For '04, the Supercharged 3.8L V6 makes 260hp, 280lb-ft. But hey, it comes with a "floor shift, 5 position PRNDL" transmission! Woot!

Re: G35 vs Impala SS 2003 (more G bait ?)
This is the same motor and chassis that powers the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and the Buick Regal GS. It's a supercharged 3.8 V6 with 240hp/280tq. It weighs around 3400-3500lbs which ironically weighs as much as the G35.
0-40 you guys can't touch them. The Roots blower makes boost straight off idle and the torque is instant. You'll probably run them down by around 80mph assuming you've got the auto G35. If you have the 6 speed G35 you'll catch them sooner assuming they're stock. The tranny mated to these 3.8 SCs is poorly geared and the blower lacks much upper rpm power therefore these cars don't have near the acceleration the VQ has after 90mph.
Be VERY aware that there are TONS of mods for the SC 3.8 and lots of guys have modified these cars. A simple pulley ($60) change on the SC and some other very simple tweaks easily drop these cars from upper 14s/lower 15s down into the lower 14s and they make about 240fwhp and 280fwtq. $1500 and you're running deep 13s in the SC 3.8 GTP/Regal/Impala chassis. I suggest you check out www.clubgp.com if you think this chassis is slow. There are plenty of guys running 12s in bonestock appearing GTPs and $4000 in mods which isn't bad considering it's a FWD sedan.

DaveB these are fwd cars and off the line we will be ahead of them and never look back. RWD is far superior off the line and those cars weigh more and dont have that tremendous of a torque advantage anyways. The GTP does 0-60 in about 6.6-6.8 while the auto G35 does in about 6.1-6.3

Seriously, go over to www.clubgp.com and do some research about the SC 3800 in the fwd Grand Prix/Regal/Impala chassis. Lots of guys have gotten 14.4-14.5@94mph+ out of these cars bonestock. These cars make a ton of torque and are FWD, but they are extremely easy to launch because you only have to launch them at 1100rpms. There's no need to torque brake plus if you do, you'll roast the tires. The cars also don't bog off the line because they make so much low rpm torque. These cars pull EASY 2.0 60' foots with some getting 1.9s on street tires. It would an act of God for a auto G35 to pull a 2.0 60' because most G autos get 2.3s and a 6 speed would be hard pressed to get anything below a 2.1. I don't know if you have drag racing experience, but a difference of .2-.3 seconds in 60' means EVERYTHING. You're talking about an instant lead of 2-3 cars right off the line.
A pulley change and some very simple intake/exhaust tweaks (~$200) and the SC 3800 is very capable of 13s. I know a ton about these cars because they are my biggest competition at the strip. DO NOT TAKE THESE CARS LIGHTLY.

Check out the new GTO:
5.7L 350hp with the GIII LS1
The 2004 Bonneville GXP will have a 4.4L V8 @ 285HP. Shoulda just gone with the 5.7...tsk tsk!

Isn't that the engine of the Olds Arura V8 if it is then man that going to be a slow ars car. If I remeber the Arura did only 6.7 0-60 with a V8 and that pretty bad for a V8.

I see you're from Florida. I suggest you go find these guys because they're located in your area.

Pay attention to the "P34" or "P32" etc, because that means 3.4" and 3.2" pulley upgrade. You'll quickly see that most of these 13 second and low 14 second SC 3800s are only running pulley, intake, and exhaust upgrades. Run a 2.8" pulley ($60), intercooler ($900), intake ($150), exhaust ($300), 1.9 rockers ($350), and cam ($500) and you're looking at a 12-second FWD muscle sedan.
Sure, the mag times say the SC 3800 is about a 15.0 second car, but I know that most guys get at least 14.8s out of these cars stock and they're far easier to launch than the G even though they're FWD. Continue to mag race and you'll get owned.
