Sedans only....
It was a mid year change in '04
'03 & early '04 are basically an upper gear limiter.
In MM if you are in 4th and at a stop it will shift auotmatically up to 4th.
Late '04s changed to the same setup as the coupe.
If in MM & stop, it will reset to 1st and stay there untill you shift. (the way it should be)
I hate having to tap, tap, tap ..to get back to 1st
Strangely Lexus still uses the old top gear limiter setup in the new IS350

05 sedan here, and not only will it automatically set itself to 1 when you stop, it will downshift to other appropriate gears as well. For example if you're in 4, and slow down to 15 miles an hour to make a turn into your community, it will shift to 2 or 3 depending on your speed. It's actually a very "smart" system. It downshifts when you're going to slow for a gear, but won't upshift until you tell it to. Works well.

Thanks for the replies. Is it simply a software update or something the dealer could take care of? Thanks.

I've driven both systems and to my surprise, I actually like the earlier "top gear limiter" setup. I like the fact that I have total control of manual mode, even from a stop. I found it annoying that when you're in MM an 04.5 and above, it always requires you to do all the shifting from the stop. It seemed like a lot of work. I like the fact that with my 03 I click it over to MM at a stop and I can tell the tranny exactly what gear I want it to shift up too or I can hold any gear I want.
One thing I do like about the 04.5+ tranny is that it's very responsive. It rips off MM shifts, even the 1-2. A WOT 1-2 manual shift in my 03 is met with an annoying reduction in power as the car shifts into 2nd. I call it Torque Management (ie a system that reduces wear on a tranny under severe load). My friend's 03 sedan does the same thing. Oddly, when I let the tranny do it's own thing on the 1-2, it rips off the 1-2 shift. Sometimes it barks the tires. Weird.

In MM mode what can you shift @ as far as RPM's. I have to shift, or at least hit the shifter @ around 6,100 rpm's to make sure I don't hit rev limiter. I really wish it was more responsive and would shift faster so I don't have to anticipate the shift. I have heard that a 10 wire grounding system will make it more responsive.

I also like limiting to 3rd gear when in stop & go city driving, and 4th when the limit is a little higher.
What I hate most though is when I want run through the gears....
when I come to a stop; if I was in 4th, then I have to shift, shift, shift to get back to 1st.
I think over all I'd prefer the 4.5+ version.
