Removing Resonator
Removing Resonator
I was at a local muffler shop asking about new exhausts/mufflers etc. and they recommended that I remove the resonator and put in a straight pipe. Anyone know what would happen if I did this?

I ended up removing the stock resonator and putting on a Magnaflow resonator. I kept the stock muffler. I think it sounds pretty good...basically just enhanced the stock sound. I think the other pluses are it is much lighter than the stock resonator and flow is a little less restrictive. Total was a $100 out the door.
this is what happens when u pull it on the coupe, no idea about a sedan - http://videos.streetfire.net/search/...119B56414B.htm

Actually, they removed the stock resonator initially and put in a straight pipe, it sounded raspy and I didn't care for it. So, they put in the Magnaflow resonator and it basically took care of the issue.
The sound is deeper at all rpm's...it's kind of hard to describe but I would say it is a deeper version of the stock sound. Doesn't completely change the stock sound like a new muffler would, just enhances what you already have.
Regarding the sound clip, I don't have the equipment to do that right now...also, I don't think sound clips actually help much. I think trial an error regarding sound works best.
Try going to your local shop and see if they will make you a deal, if you don't like the sound coming out with the new resonator, see if they will weld the stock one back on included in the original quote.
If you do decide to do it, let us know what you think...I really like mine.

ok, so its confirmed. Removing the stock resonator creates rasp. Pre Mufflers are meant to absorb high pitched noise, so it really is not much of a surprise. Alright. I think I will do that, get a magnaflow.
For me, it was the way to go. I was going to go with a full cat back exhaust but for 7-8 rwhp, (according to several dynos on this forum) it wasn't worth it. I still wanted a fuller exhaust note and this option worked. If the dynos on the (to be created) Fast Intentions exhaust for the sedan show significant rwhp, I might go that route. But for now, this works...
I've tried using the Magnaflow 22" resonator with the stock muffler on my 5AT G35 and had noticable droning at ~2200 rpm. After about 2 weeks I removed the Magnaflow and went back to the stock resonator since 2200rpm was around where the rpms sit when cruising around town or on the highway but YMMV.
For some reason I don't notice the drone. I drive from the Sacramento area to the SF Bay area once a week and there was no difference for me on the hwy. I don't think they installed the 22" resonator on my car...it seemed shorter actually. The one thing I notice about these forums is really...to each his own...

lolol gojc hasn't logged in here in over 7 years, plus he wasn't talking about replacing the muffler like the vid you posted. He was talking about replacing the stock resonator but thanks for trying to be helpful.......
