I got scared off of DS mode when (below 1k miles) the G would really hang onto 2nd gear when accelerating out of a low speed turn. The handful of times I exceeded the 4k rpm boundary was in this manner.
Going into a turn fast and braking in Speed mode will often cause a downshift, and it hangs because the higher RPM in a lower gear will launch the car when you step back on the gas. If you don't accelerate hard (i'm assuming you came into the turn with some speed) the trans hangs, due to the downshift rev matching. It supposedly cuts back on emissions.

Okay, this might be a dumb question, but what's the difference in DS and manual mode?

DS = Damn Skippy!! er... "D"rive "S"port mode.
A quick search here brings up the whole write-up.
DS will shift a little more aggressively and hold higher RPMs and lower gears longer. It's a blast.
Manual requires you to manually shift.
DS mode is engaged when you pull the shifter left and leave it centered.

DS is still auto, you don't do the shifting. M is manual tiptronic, you have to do every upshift (but not the downshifts, which is freakin sweet!)

Downshifting is optional, if you want engine braking.

Thanks. Obviously I don't use DS too much. I'm more of a D kind of guy.
