sorry for the rant, but i just saw this video of the G37 and it shows they have a pass through trunk. Throws out any excuse for not giving it to the sedan

Good question.

I've been asking it since the first day I saw the 07.

The previous coupes had a real pass through also didn't they? That is one thing that bugs me. I understood it when you have the reclining seats but the '07 doesn't have that so I don't get the reason now.

A pass through trunk makes the vehicle's structure less rigid and adds more weight. Having just a small pass through allows for some chassis reinforcement behind the rear seats. This makes the vehicle safer and lighter.

On a coupe, it is a more important selling point, so the sacrifice is made. It's one reason the G37 weighs more.

Earlier versions only had the small pass through and not the fold down seats (I had a '03 Sedan up until last Friday.

This is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine and if you look at the Altima - it has the split fold down!

I think it's because they decided to give us reclining back seats - worthless in my mind. I never sit back there!

Isn't because there's an X-brace to stiffen up the frame behind the rear seats of our '07 sedans?

Here's what I found on the web site for the sedan. I thought I have a pass through on mine?

...
Front armrest with storage compartment, 12-volt power outlet and audio auxiliary input
Fold-down rear-center armrest with locking trunk pass-through
Front and rear carpeted floor mats
Cargo net tie-down anchors in trunk

It's a small pass through the size of your armrest. Haven't used that once.

Bingo. That's exactly why.

The pass-through isn't the most useful thing other than what it is designed for: skis. They used to be called a "ski pass through" in the mid-1990s when they started becoming popular.

According to this logic it should be the other way around. I doubt anyone who is in the market for a coupe has trunk space on the top of his/her list; not to mention - the added weight.

There is definitely a pass-thru... I used it the other day for the first time

... had to transport a 6"x2" beam from Home Depot.

Exactly SPEED. Seems to me the logic would be to make the coupe stiffer and sportier then the sedan. Maybe the 08 sedan will have a full pass-thru.

two less doors equals more inherent rigidity, so a fold-down trunk (by the way, that's the proper term... a pass-through IS what our sedans have) is apparently acceptable from a torsional rigidity standpoint.

and an argument against the statement that coupe owners are less likely to want to use a fold-down, i would say that the rear seats in the coupe are likely to be used less often than a sedan, as they are not as comfortable for adults. therefore, i would posit that the fold down does make more sense in a coupe, as it negates the use of the rear seats, while a pass through does not.
