interesting... so it seems to work in some cases with either consult 2 or 3... my dealer isn't very savy though from what i can tell, so I'd probably get charged the hour and it would really take them that long.

HAHA this is funny that you mention this. I was at the dealer the other day getting the car checked out by my mechanic and he mentioned it to me when he had it hooked up to the computer and i told him to go ahead and do it. He advanced my timing 2 degrees and the car seems to be smoother through the mid range. The car typically has this huge pull right around 3700 rpm's, but now you dont really feel it. Its almost as though its generating more power down low. I have an infiniti and it was all done at the nissan dealership.

Cost = $0.00 he hooked it up and did it free of charge!

you my friend, are a lucky SOB. i had some ref as a tech changing the oil. i asked him and he, like a retard asked his supervisor. so obviously ima get a big fat NO. i know a tech who will do it for 50 but i figured i could get the guy to do it for free and maybe entice with 20 bucks.lol

Found this in the FSM, section EC-19

ITEM SPECIFICATION
Idle speed A/T: 650 ± 50 rpm (in P or N position)
M/T: 650 ± 50 rpm (in Neutral position)
Ignition timing A/T with 4WAS: 11 ± 5° BTDC (in P or N position)
A/T without 4WAS: 15 ± 5° BTDC (in P or N position)
M/T with 4WAS: 11 ± 5° BTDC (in Neutral position)
M/T without 4WAS: 15 ± 5° BTDC (in Neutral position)

---------

So I guess stock timing is 15 degrees and the adjustment pushes it to 17? Just guessing/curious. I'm gonna bug my dealer too ;-)

---------
I also found this:

Nissan Dealers can do the 2 Degree Timing Advance...

The 2 Degree Timing Advance can be done by a Nissan Dealer using the ConsultII or ConsultIII software depending on the year of the vehicle or by many others using similar software that modifies the vehicles ECU such as products by Uprev and Autoenginuity.

Dealer Instructions:

Two Degree Timing Advance Instructions (For Dealers w/ Consult II)

Warm up vehicle.
On CONSULT 2 screen choose ENGINE
After communication with Convertor will display a bunch of choices.
Press WORK SUPPORT
See more choices, press TARGET IGN TIMING
Press UP x2 for 2 degrees, correction which you should be able to see.
Press UPDATE.
Now press BACK
On the menu screen find IDLE AIR VOL LEARN.
Press, and perform to correct your idle since you just raised it 75rpm with timing advance.

Having these instructions in hand greatly increases the chance that your dealer will do it. Prices usually ranges from $0 - 1hr Labor.

If the timing on this car is like the timing on any other car with a computer, it's not just a number (like 15).

Timing is calculated from a table based on RPM and load. There's a different timing spark advance for every different RPM and Load. Timing is higher at low load/low rpms and lower at high load, high rpms. On my heads/cam 2002 Trans am, I could run about 40 degrees during non load, 33 degrees at partial load, and 24 degrees of timing at WOT with no knock retard.

What will 2 degrees of timing do? You'll be lucky to get 2hp. But, if it's free.... why not? Just don't ever every use the lower octane gas after that. Premium only to be safe.

On the Trans Am, when it was closer to stock, 4 degrees of timing at WOT wasn't noticeable, but 5-6 degrees at part throttle was very noticeable.

The base timing is at idle. So it is just a number. And yes the computer retards timing as rpms rise.

My car will spend over 90% of it's running time below 4000rpm, so that is my focus. Advancing the timing even 2 degrees could give a noticeable (not huge, noticeable) difference at the low end. At WOT and high rpms, it could be a negative to peak hp.

I'm getting a feeling of deja vu

Had my timing advanced to 17 degrees BTDC yesterday at my friendly neighborhood Nissan dealer (less than a mile away; Infiniti dealer is farther). Cost me $50 (but they washed it too, so not too bad). I brought directions for using Consult II and Consult III, and he used Consult III.

Difference is subtle. Car seems to pull more strongly starting below 2000, before it didn't seem to kick in much until over 3000. Neck snapping ability seems to be enhanced too.

Or I could be hallucinating, but for $50for the timing advance plus having had the ITB-045 done previously, I'm very happy with the car now.
