Navigation question

I just got the g35x sedan this past Tuesday, black on black, premium package. I love it so far, but I have one problem. The nav does not recognize many streets or landmarks when I try to put them in for directions. I'm in NYC so its not like its a remote area. Anybody know if there is some kind of update I can do for the maps or something along those lines? Any help is much appreciated.

I am in the same area and I have had no problems at all. Make sure you have the right region set on your nav. You can do this by going to settings, then select nav

Set the region and go through the voice adaptation.

I tried, still an issue.

Ok so I just went and checked and my region is set correctly. It is still not recognizing some streets on Long Island which have been around for over 30 years and a TGIF Friday's restaurant that has been around for at least 10 years. I'm just using those as examples. Wouldn't you think that the maps should pick up places such as those??? Anything else I can try?

Go through the voice adaptation.

The voice recognition is for 'standard' english, and different accents, such as a NY accent, will throw it off.

Go into settings, others, turn on alternative command mode, and an expanded menu will come up with voice adaptation.

Go through that voice adaptation process and you should have no problems.

Not using voice

Thanks for trying to help me Mike. I have not been using the voice recognition at all for the nav. I've been entering everything manually. It's just weird that it is not recognizing a lot of very common places that have been around for a while. Any other suggestions??? Thanks again.

More then likely it's just poor mapping. I have the same problem here in Houston. The system as a whole is very good, but the maps are crap compared to aftermarket units.

It shouldn't be the maps. Zenrin usese Navteq maps which are the same maps used in Garmins and most other units. There are only 2 map providers to GPS units. Navteq and Teleatlas. You can always call Zenrin tech support. I would go to an Infiniti dealership and see if another G35 can find the streets. If the streets have been there that long, I have a hard time believing they can't be found. I just purchased Zenrin 7.3 update disk for our Nissan Quest and while it doesn't have all of the new streets, it does have reference to them as "future". Generally digital maps are up to 3 years behind paper maps.

Actually there is some debate about Zenrin using Navteq maps. They are no longer partners, and Zenrin is no longer listed as a user of Navteq maps, nor do Zenrin list Navteq as one of the sources for their maps.

Either way, they are not using the same Navteq maps that the aftermarket units are, as I have no problems with my Garmin Nuvi, or my buddies TomTom.

Most of the issues we are having are not "new construction" but roads that have been there 10-15 years. I've also had problems with it taking me down roads that don't (have never and will never) exist.

I've learned to live with it....but it is a problem.

Enter the street before you put in the address #.

If the address number is out of range, then the street is automatically eliminated.

Also, when you enter the street, specify N/S/E/W and st/ave/bl etc.

That's a very good question. I just received my 08 DVD last friday and it did say Navteq maps, but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that's the case. I too find that my Garmin is much more accurate and takes much better routes in comparison to any of the in car Nav units I've used. Nissan/Infiniti units don't take horrible routes like Toyota's Nav units do, but they certainly aren't the best either.

Interesting.....if it still says Navteq, they must still be using it as one of their "various sources" as the website lists. Odd that it would have these kinds of issues then.

That's one reason I decided against the Nav package with my G. In my experience over the years, the portable Garmins provide much better routes and guidance in comparison to in car Nav's. Not to mention the price difference.
