G35 Auto Question

I was wondering what other owners think about this. Do you guys think infiniti should have made the new g35 a 6 speed auto transmission? i didn't check if someone made a thread about this before but i think it would have made a difference in the performance, or at least in the gas mileage of the new auto sedan. Just curious..

i would have loved a 6th gear. It would have helped gas mileage BIGGG time. but i guess they didnt bother and went straight to making 7-gear...which comes out on the next model.

as far as performance, i think it would have been equal..give or take .3 seconds or so....its more weight. I would think its a faster revver going through the gears

Depends how much the R&D would have added to the cost of each car, but yeah, I'd like to have an extra gear or two.

Is this confirmed anywhere or still just speculation?

I don't believe it's going to improve gas mileage that much and most of the gains would be seen at highway cruising. At the most I'd say 2 miles a gallon.

imo they should have made it 6 gears. i havent heard about 7 speed but thats awesome. comparing to the is350, the 335i etc, isnt the new g35 sedan the only one in that bracket to be a 5 speed auto? I think it would have weighed it down a little but gas mileage would have def gotten better, if you are going 75-80 your rpms are already at 3K....just speculation..

The gas mileage does not improve by any wide margin. The automatic 08 5 speed G35 is rated at 17 city 24 highway. The automatic 08 6 speed IS350 is rated at 18 city 25 highway. The automatic 08 6 speed 335i is rated at 17 city 26 highway. There is virtually no difference as far as fuel economy when comparing the G35's fuel economy only having a 5 speed auto compared to the competitions 6 speeds. We'll see what happens with the new 7 speed auto. It might improve the fuel economy by 1 or 2 mpg but it might not depending on how it is geared, etc... Infiniti does not really seem to be interested in fuel economy. If they were they'd offer a less powerful more fuel efficient engine in the G35 like Lexus and BMW already do.

adding another gear would not significantly alter the top gear ratio/final drive...just fyi. a 7spd auto just tightens ratios up a bit so you have less of that "always in the wrong gear" sensation. the top gear does tend to get slightly taller, but you're not likely to see a significant difference in gear ratios between the top gear of a 5spd auto and one from a 7spd auto, differing final drives being taken into account
