so, i am trying to decide.... i am on a tight budget right now and can only do one of the following two things. i am debating if i should get new tires since mine a pretty worn. i am think of going with a shorter sidewall. thinking of 225/50/17 tires. on the other hand i also want to get my rims powder coated glossy black.. not sure what to do!!! please help!! hahah

TIRES!!!!!!! thats the only thing between you and the road! i would sitck with 225/55. 225/50 is going to be too small and create an uglier/bigger wheel gap.

+1... larger wheel gap FTL. Plus, keeping the same wheels with a different tire causes the speedo to become inaccurate.

Tires first, especially since yours are worn. Unless you plan on letting your tires blow out and ruin your freshly powder coated wheels. 
You can improve handling significantly if you go for stickier rubber. You wont really gain much with the 5% reduction in sidewall so stick with the 55's. I'd bet the variation from brand to brand & model to model in sidewall strength will impact handling more than going with the lower profile tire.

This shouldn't even be a question. Tires should be first and formost in that situation! I was also stick to 225/55, the wheels can wait until later.

If you wanna go to a 50 sidewall, then you should go with a wider tire, like a 245/50. Remember, the profile is a percentage of the tires width. So with a 225/55, 55% of 225 is 123.75mm. So if you wanna go 50 series you need 245/50; 50% of 245 is 122.5mm. This will keep your wheel gap in check!

Yeah. But it'll may look a little beefy compared to the rim. It'll fit though!
