Thanks!
Confirm with your dealer, but from what I know if you have a persistant or related problem that was being dealt with during warranty after the warranty expired, it should still be covered so long as it is related. If not, check your local lemon laws.

My chain didn't break but my pin in the lower timing chain gear came out of the crank when the Harmonic Balancer came loose out of the blue.
It destroyed my heads though.

Back in the days I had a car VW with a timing Belt which is supposed to be replaced at 60,000 miles. Mine went bad at 50 something, didn't break just knocking when cold, anywayz when is the timing Chain on the G supposed to be Replaced / Checked since nothing lasts forever?

I don't have a new G but am looking into buying an 07 Friday so this is helpful in making a decision. The 07 I'm looking at only has 24K+ miles

How did it destroy the heads? I heard the pistons in these engines won't hit the valves if the chain broke.

Hmmmm, I don't know for sure they did. Hmmmm, I might have replaced my motor for nothing. BUT that's ok if I did. i got a motor with less than 5k miles on it for $500, and spent a total of $800 and 3 days for the swap. I can't complain.... I only assumed that it was like every other Nissan I have seen where if the chain lets go then the pistons hit the valves. Don't know, don't really care since the motor had 130k miles on it when it happened and burned a lot of oil

^Sounds like its time to rebuild that motor with some forged internals and a little boost...

That's a hell of a deal I paid $900 for a blown head gasket repair and I thought I got a good deal where did you purchase the new motor from?

i really hate to scare others......but i have had some ugly issues with spitting and sputtering around the 2min mark during warmup during acceleration or cruising conditions.

In all the research over four forums, i have found, the HR motors have a common issue amongst a handful of them....its a sensor somewhere fudging up the a/f-timing mix on the factory maps. the ecu is trying to correct a problem somewhere in the maze of electronic monitoring equipment. read through this thread.....if you then search my350z you will find similar threads. In the end, a few completely stock vehicles have had hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of equipment replaced with no fixes yet.

in this thread you see the situation happen to a guy.....dealership tears it down to find a dowel pin on a cam gear let go....car jumped timing and valves and pistons crashed.....even though they followed a previous spitting/sputtering problem involving the exhaust camshaft timing sensors.....they blamed his COLD AIR INTAKES. $13000 got his car back with another motor in it.

car died on highway-NEED HELPl

Ebay

A Infiniti Technician in Jersey listed it incorrectly. I was the only bidder on it and the reserve was $500. Can't beat it. Runs perfectly.

I just got a call from the dealer and here is the deal...

he says a tooth in my crankshaft gear was broken and that likely caused the timing chain to break. so they replaced the gear, timing chain, and pulleys.

in this process they had to replace the oil and coolant. since i do all the filters myself, the only other thing left on a 60K service is the fuel induction system stuff. that cost $172. so i am basically getting a 60K service, a new timing chain and some other parts for $172 (plus my cost of filters).

the 60K service is typically $590. so assuming i never have any more related problems...i guess this is a WIN for me!

what do you guys think?
anything i should ask them about?
anything not sound right?
How did i break the tooth on the gear?

thanks everyone!

sounds like you came out good man.

i would ask them if they know the root cause of the problem cause there have been a few other cases of timing chains breaking from cam gear issues on the vq35hr.

just a random guess.....possibly low oil pressure cause the timing chain tensioner to loosen and it bunched up for a split second at the gear? or the solenoid controlling timing on the exhaust cams?

anyways, there is something happening in these motors thats causing serious stress on the cam gears. I dunno if its the oil solenoid controlled(exhaust) or electromagnetic controlled(intake) gears though. either way, I am now in the executive decision phase. this is due to my own issues that are leading me to believe this broken motor fate is in my near future.......part out-n-sell

...and the drama continues....

I picked up my car from the dealer where the work was done. (3 hours from my house) on the way home, the check engine light came on. So i brought it to the dealership by my house and this time I got a G37 for a loaner instead of a Kia!
