Possible new owner w/ ?'s
Possible new owner w/ ?'s
First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Justin, and i'm looking at possibly purchasing a 2007 Infiniti G35S w/ 6-speed manual and 75k miles.
Currently i'm driving a 2004 Acura TL 6-speed manual. I love that car! The problem i'm having is that i'm getting bored with it, plus it's FWD. What i'm currently looking for is a 4 door luxury-ish car with a 6-speed manual either RWD or AWD, not horrible gas mileage, and around my price range (up to 20k). The G35S fits in that category.
They have the above mentioned G35S at a local dealership. 6-speed 75k miles, and they're asking $19.9k for it, which i think is a reasonable price.
A couple of questions / concerns i have are:
I've read that the 3.5 engine burns a lot of oil around 100k miles, is that true?
When i test drove the car, the shifter vibrated a lot, is that normal? What's the reason for that?
Another concern is gas mileage. My TL, is a 3.2L V6 with 250hp and I average about 22 mixed city and highway driving. On a 4100 mile trip to Oregon (mostly highway, but a decent amount of city driving) I averaged 30mpg. Now i'm not expecting that from the G, but decent mileage would be nice. I already have a Jeep Cherokee lifted 4.5" on 32's that gets horrible gas mileage. (Don't worry, i'll search for a MPG thread, before i ask about it).
Now, a couple of things i really liked:
The exhaust tone sounded great!
It was a blast to drive.
Bose stereo was pretty amazing.
I'm still undecided as to what i'm going to do. I love my TL, but i'm bored especailly with the lack of aftermarket support.
If I go to test drive/ look at it again any things I should look for specifically?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long-winded post.

I'm assuming you're purchasing a sedan. The V36 sedans lack aftermarket support, probably more than the TL if n e thing :-(
First off, the price they are asking for is a bit high IMO. It depends on where you live I guess, but even here in Hawaii, with 75K on the ODO it would be around 18 to $1900.
I'm not sure about the shifter vibration, as I drive a AT and may be different, but I've never felt that sort of vibration in my car. The gas mileage is pretty crappy in G, I get around 17 mixed (and gas price in Hi right now really sucks...$4.70 per gal kicking my a$$).
One thing you should really look at in the test drive is if the RPM jump in gear shift, and idling. Again, because I own an AT I can't say much, but search on this forum since that is the most common problem I see posted for our cars. Good luck :-)

well honestly man I was a stick guy for life until I test drove the 5at.... I like being able to not have to worry about shifting when getting grocieries or talking to someone but being able to select gears with the paddles or **** when I want to.. 5at are faster in the 1/4 and if I was going to sell my car which I might I would ask 22k obo and it has 46k miles and its modded with just suspension stuff and I have never touched the motor. You can see it in the blue collar suspension write up... the thing still has a warranty so 20k for yours is a bit high.
the mpgs should be comparable to the TL, i get 21-22mpg easy with mixed driving, 6mt is much more fun obviously and the shifter does vibrate at idle (normal) but nothing too different from many other cars iv driven however while driving i havent had any vibration unless im slowing down without brakes (engine braking).
Now to the infamous AT vs MT
is true if you stink at driving stick in which case stick with 5at, lol. Seriously though with the ATs today the difference is minimal, but still the power to wheel in MTs will always be greater due to lesser drive train loss and the gearboxes on the G's are awesome and great fun to shift at high rpms.
When choosing between MT and AT the more power or faster rule hardly applies anymore with these high tech fast shifting ATs, so when deciding between that just go with what you like, if you life stick shift then you just wont want to buy an AT.
These HR motors dont burn oil, at least on mine, their are a few 100k+ members here with 0 problems, it was some of the older DE motors that used to burn oil.
i think its a good move and one that you should be happy with when switching from TL to G however the price for those many miles is borderline deal imo, does it have nav or tech packages? if so then then price is fine.

well said... just stating its been proven with factual numbers that even a magazine paid test driver could not go as fast in a stick g35s then a 5at... but thas just staight line is you buy this car and dont use it for turns give me your keys lol!
I agree on pricing & mpg on this page...
With regards to price, you guys seem about on the money... I am selling my G (to get a more econobox car for commuting.) And I'm selling for $21,800 with 46000 on it as well. (07 G35S 5AT) Don't think thats being greedy or to light..
With regards to mileage. I get 20 mpg in mostly city driving. I get 22-24 if I take it pretty light, if I stick to my routine to work & back with a few normal weekly errands mixed in. Pure hwy I got between 26-26.5 at non-illegal speeds. That's without a lot of 'driving like I stole it' moments mixed in...

Honestly, that's the most important thing to me, is that it's a 6mt. Automatics just aren't as much fun. The place that has this car is a "wholesale" lot, so they don't really negotiate the price, It's more like take it or leave it. They do have another 07 G35S 6mt on their lot (which is weird, because i can't seem to find any others in the state of New Mexico) with 45k miles. I think the only difference is the one I was looking at has a spoiler. The only problem with that one is they're asking 23k for it, which is a little out of my price range. The one that I drove does have the nav package, that's for sure, but what's included in the tech package?
I think i'll hold off, and look for one with less miles. I would just feel more comfortable. I looked for almost a year, before I found the 6-speed TL I wanted, so it's not a big deal. Or...maybe i'll go take a look at the one with less miles today...we'll see.
Thanks for all your help, guys!

on the 07's tech package includes a back up camera, adaptive front lights and intelligent cruise control. i too suggest to keep looking for a lower miles car, but imo the 23k G35s 6mt with 45k miles is a good deal if it has nav.
