Loud bang while backing up!

So I'm heading out with the family, going to the Auto Show, find a parking garage to park the car get to the kiosk guy tells me lot is full, no big deal, back up and BANG,

I must have scrap the bottom of my car. The garage was on a hill going down and the street was not even either.
As I'm driving I notice the car has lost some power and is noisier like a hole in the exhaust.

The next day I start her up and sure enough, I see the exhaust coming out of the front of the passenger catalytic only, and after driving it around the engine light came on.
I figure that's because of the hole, O2 sensor isn't getting full exhaust.

That loud bang must have been something breaking off and causing a hole. Now to make an appointment to get this thing fixed. Expensive auto show!

That's a bummer alright. I would recommend driving it as little as possible until you get it fixed. It's going to throw the ECU for sure, hence the CEL. Sounds like the impact was fairly severe to the exhaust system. I'd be sure and have the entire length checked out from manifold to muffler tip. G/L

well I brought it to infiniti and what they showed me was that somewhere something caught on the exhaust and put enough pressure to break the weld on the catalytic passenger side, where the the support is. So it broke the weld there and caused a hole.
They told me to bring it to a Speedy or Midas muffler shop to get the hole welded shut. They (infiniti) don't weld/fix they just replace. So going in the morning to a speedy shop and getting the hole welded shut.
Then I have to bring it back to infiniti to reset the check engine light. I asked if there would be any issues if I dont' get this fixed right away, they said no, I'll just blow more gas than normal.

^ thats good to know, when you go to shops like Midas(most of em here in the states) remember that they are not quite the pricing by the book place when it comes to such small welding fixes, i always just walk to the garage door and talk to one of the mechs and tell em i want something welded and the guy would do it real cheap if you give him direct cash.

Iv have had to get a few welds done in the past and they have all ranged between $20-60 max. where most just like to charge $40

he said he has to take down the exhaust in order to get to the hook to weld it. It's in a hard place and the welding torch can't get to it. so that will cost me a little more because of the labour.
But it's still cheaper than getting a new CAT which i'm told is around $1000 plus installation
I'll see how this goes, if it last for a couple of years I"ll be happy, I just hope the weld holds.
At least where it's at there shouldn't be an issue with rust on it. too hot there for water to form rust.

^ Ah in that case i would expect about ~$100+ but with a good weld you should have nothing to worry about and if the cat goes bad you can pick up cheap lightly used OEM online or HFC IF need be.

Good to know, if these guys can't do it, I'll bring it to the Midas down the street from them and see what they can do.
I will also have to think about looking for a used one online like you said.
Just living in Canada the deals aren't as good as down in the USA.
I just can't believe the price difference on things.

funny guys, upgrade, I wish, with two kids NOTHING is getting upgraded. LOL

I got my car back, cost me $110 for them to weld it up again sounds like before. Just hope this lasts now.

Now to go back to infiniti to get them to clear the check engine light (FREE of charge) because they already soaked me for $120 just to look at it!

^ ouch! but the light should go away by itself in a few days of normal driving if the issue is resolved, but since youve paid them so much, might as well make some use of that

I asked about that, and the service manager told me that the light will not go out on it's own. They have to reset it on their end.

I was wondering if I disconnect the battery will the check engine light come off then?
No big deal i'm brining it back and it's free of charge.
