If you know what your doing there is nothing to fear. Using cheap gas and motor oil will cause more carbon build up in areas like the throttle body. Its a good rule of thumb to clean it out ever 60k miles or so.

Wait a minute... the throttle body sucks in the air from the outside, so using cheap gas in your car wouldn't affect it.... if the other drivers that u r driving behind r, that would since ur sucking the fumes in.

Carbon deposits in the TB usually come for oil vapors by the PCV.

I clean mine every 20K, which is basically the rate at which I experience idle issues.

My G35 is at 75k and I'm taking it in to have a number of routine things done, should I do this as a matter of priority? Car idles with a bit of unsteadiness, but not to the degree I would be concerned about otherwise ...

Just cleaned mine yesterday at 155K when I removed the intake to do my annual K&N filter cleaning. The front wasn't that bad, but when I removed the TB and saw the backside eww. Had to use a toothbrush to get the buildup off. After doing the idle air reset pedal dance thing my idle is back down to normal with the added benefit of being smooth as a whistle. Engine used to vibrate a lot a idle and I was tempted to bump the idle up some, now I don't need to.

Every time I think about doing this... I read a few threads about people who killed their TB and had to spend hundreds on a new one.

Doesn't seem worth the risk.

I am going to get mine done at a Nissan dealer, so hopefully it would cost less than doing that at an Infiniti dealer
