Having a few issues and need some help

Hey guys,

As the title states i have a few issues with my car and was hoping that you guys have some input. Issue 1, i have a loud rattle coming from the rear of the car. I have searched and searched and have tried all different diagnosing, which have been unsuccessful. I originally thought it was an issue similar the that of the first gen sedan where the rear window bolt was too long and left the winfow a little loose. I tried all of the ways to diagnose this and came to the conclusion this was not the issue. I also thought maybe the rear bench was loose but again i secured the seat and put weight on it and the rattle was still there. Then i tried taking foam padding and shoving it between the window and rear deck, and still the rattle stayed. Now today i cam up with my last thought, the emergency trunk release. I tape and glued it down and still have the rattle. I am begging, if anyone knows what this is, please help.

Issue 2, i have been having a strong gas smell in my car but only when it has been running for a little while. I checked the gasket for the fuel pump and it looked ok, and i think i would smell gas all of the time not just when the car is on if this was the issue. Now i think it might be an exhaust leak. Any easy way of checking? Cant wait until i get my lift installed next year lol.

Well hopefully someone can give me some input. I love the car, got 90k on it and want to keep it forever, but this rattle is killing me.

I can chime in for your rattle as I had the same issue. Mine ended up being one of the muffler brackets had broken on the driver side. Is your rattle when the car is running? start the car and go and hold each of the muffler tips still to see which one may be causing your issue.

My bolt had broken off and once I secured a new one, voila! the rattle was gone.

Hopefully this is the case for you

Since you have a gas smell I'd take your G to Nissan and have them check out both issues. They charge less than Infiniti and I believe their mechanics are better trained from my experience. Gas leaks are nothing to mess with even how small....Gary

The thing is if it was a gas leak, i would smell it all the time in the car and the smell would be in the garage. I am going to see if i can use my friends lift and see if i can find any holes in the exhaust. As for the exhaust being the reason for the rattle, i dont think that is my problem but i will deffinitely check it out.

Really appreciate the responses. I love the car but these two issues are become such a nuisance.

Have you ridden in the back seat while someone else drives so that you can really cover troubleshooting it 100% ??
If all else fails and you are positive it's in the cabin, you could try removing the back seats and then going for a ride.

As far the gas smell issue goes, is there any chance you recently overfilled your gas tank, or filled it really high while it was really cold outside? It could be that the gas either overflowed or expanded and saturated the charcoal canister on the tank vent.

I am going to try that tommorow. In the middle of pulling the seats out so i can inspect everything while my friend drives. I have a feeling it might be a bolt that came loose or something. I really hope i find it.

As far as the gas, that is a good theory. Ill try to not completely fill it next time and see if the smell comes back. Although, i still smelled it today and i have a half tank. Idk lol, so confused

I'm not sure about our G's, but with other cars the charcoal can become saturated to the point it could take quite a long time to dissapate; sometimes even requiring replacement. Hopefully that's not your case though.

So drove around in the back seat and it is deffinitely coming from the rear deck. Next step is to check in there lol.

I recall a couple of people stating that they had loud rattles in the rear of the car which ended up being the rear bose woofer grill while a couple had a smaller rattle which turned out to be some issue with the rear seat belt assembly maybe searching for these two things will help you find an answer

That is a huge help. Do you by any chance have a link to the thread or remember how it was fixed? Being i do not have bose i am leaning more towards it being the setbelt assembly.

This is form the older gen G but im sure there is another thread for the 2nd gen G as well that i cant find now but the remedy should be the same... read post 9 and 11HERE it seems that the brake light wire might also be the culprit... hope it helps!
