Tachometer Reading Super Low (video) in 2007 Sedan

Hey everyone.

I was wondering if anyone had run across something similar to this.

I have a 2007 G35 Sedan and this has only recently been occurring. Occasionally when I am sitting in traffic, with the a/c on blast, my tachometer will drop to around 200 rpm, and as of most recently, is even showing 0 rpms.

The two changes to the car recently are a subwoofer install and that it has been 100+ degrees this last week where I live in Cali.

When this happens, the car does not feel bad at all. You would think anything below 500 rpm might shake or lobe the call a little bit, but seriously nothing changes. It does lobe, it sounds the same, it takes off fine, basically its weird.

About 4 months ago I had Infiniti flashed my ECU for the hesitation/low rpm issue and it worked perfectly.

This has only come up since, like I said, I installed the subwoofer and amp and also since its been so hot recently.

It does matter if I shut my stereo and a/c off when the rpms drop, it will not go back up to normal (600 - 800 rpm). Now, if I shut my car off, and turn it back on, rpms are perfectly normal.

If you watch this video, I have the a/c on and stereo off, i give it a rev, and you can see it drop down. Then I turn the car off and back on and even blast the a/c and you can see it doesn't do much to the rpm.

I used a multi-meter to check all my connections. Battery is at 12.5, and with the car running was around 14, even with the stereo and a/c on. Ground resistance was 0 to the block so I do not think any of my recent stereo changes had an impact (but who knows).

Anyone else experience this? Issue with the mechanical gauge itself or maybe how the rpm's are being read?

Thanks for the info VQsmile.

I was able to do the reset procedure. At first it didn't do much and when I turned the car on the tach didnt move at all.

Then when I did the reset procedure again the gauges moved to about 1/5 of the way and when I turned the car on it seemed normal.

It was not in the 110's again so that may have had something to do with it.

Thanks for this link tho I appreciate it.

I had the exact same issue as you happen a few days ago (I posted in the thread linked by vqsmile) and am pretty much certain at this point it was due to the extreme heat we are having. Just as an update here, I never performed the reset. I'm also in Cali.

I have not had the issue return since it has somewhat cooled down.

So even after doing this reset the issue still persists when it is very hot here.

Doesn't change the idle or anything, just visually annoying.

My guess would be that it is a bad solder joint or connection on the circuit board for the gauge cluster. Generally speaking, once an electrical contact starts exhibiting intermittent symptoms, they don't get better.

I don't expect it to get better, and it is only an aesthetics thing. What is odd is just that it only does it when its super hot outside.

I figured if it was a bad connection, it would just stop working. So I wonder what the heat has to do with it.

E X P A N .. S ... I .... O ....... N

If there is a marginal electrical contact, it may allow acceptable contact and hence conductivity when cooler, yet as things heat up and expand, the circuit board may flex slightly and cause a gap to open or at least an increase in resistance across the contact point.
