There are aftermarket two part boots. They simply work like a sammich. They are not long lasting, but do the job for the time being.

Technology might have improved by now and they perform better than they did before thought, I'm not sure.

LOL. Sorry, been having issues of my own and put that on the wrong thread/site - trying to figure out my own ordeal....

Go to page 17, and it will tell you how to replace only the outer boot with the REAL deal without taking the axle off the car, which I would definitely do as your boot is newly torn and the outer joint is still no doubt good. To boil it down, just have to pull your tire off, then remove the outer tie rod end from the hub/knuckle assembly as well as remove the bolt holding the upper end of the steering knuckle, then work the axle out of the hub carefully.

The directions on how to pull the outer CV joint off the axle are there.

Other than the standard sockets and wrenches and mallets/hammers, you'll need a pair of the circlip pliers and a drive shaft slide hammer, both of which I have been able to "rent" for free from AutoZone before. And they will also let you borrow their boot band tool, which you'll obviously need. *****Make sure that you do not apply outward force (away from the differential, that is) to the inside part of the axle where the expansion/triax joint is - you can rip that boot and even completely separate that joint by pulling too hard on it. To keep from doing that, put one hand on the slide hammer and hammer away, but keep your other hand on the opposite side of the CV joint on the inner shaft.

I would not trust your axle, which is still good, to a split boot. Most likely, you'll end up needing to order an OEM axle, and those ain't cheap - they're about $500, unless you're lucky enough to find a reman for possibly $300 on eBay.

This is a definite fix it now, fix it right situation. Count yourself lucky you found the tear shortly after it happened and take advantage of it.

But you might be lucky...RockAuto also lists a reman in stock for the whole shaft assembly, and the price is right....$93 includes the core, too. If they really have that shaft in stock, do not wait, order it now, since their inventory on these is very low. Usually they only have the option to ship and reman your own axle to AC Cardone.

so i left it for me mechanic to do today...he couldn't' get the axel out at all...(his approach to gettting it clean and a new boot in. Really jammed in there...so i am picking it back up not fixed and leaving if for a few days next week as i will be in FLA.


Basically he said everything is pretty frozen down there and his vice ect wouldn't make it budge so he was going to try heating it I THINK is what he said...no 100% sure. But told me if something goes wrong it can be not a $200 job but a 1,000 job if i need a new axle.



I think i remember exactly what caused it...going over a huge..HUGE kirb the day before i found this out....stupid me. Thought all was well
