C1668 and C1686 - 4WAS/SLIP/VDC lights

***UPDATED****
I I had to order the lower steering column from japan through the dealer. That part was about $1800 or so. It is important to note that they will tell you it's not available for the G35 anymore. However, the part is the SAME part from a 2015 Q60 w/ 4was and shares the same part number. The other trick is that they will have to contact Corporate to see if they can get it, and they can, from Japan.

I just got the repair done. It's about 5-7 hours of labor, give or take.

Replacing this part is, in fact, what fixed all of the codes and warnings. Also, it fixed my steering wheel being about 45 degrees off to the right.

ICC, VDC, SLIP all works fine. just drove it 2hrs back from the dealer. no issues.

Glad that insurance is paying for it... otherwise, not sure if it was worth it.

I had an issue where my parking brake wasn't up far enough (needs adjusted) and the G35S rolled down a slight hill, hitting a tree and going off road a bit.

It originally looked like purely cosmetic.

After driving it home from the body shop, I noticed 2 things:
1. The ICC wasn't detecting cars (front bumper damaged)
2. After getting it home, the next day the 4WAS/VDC/SLIP lights came on. ICC cruise wouldn't engage.

My reader didn't report any errors. (it's not a CONSULT II/III).

Took it back to shop. Found codes:
C1666 Lock Holder Gap error
and C1686 4WAS main Control Unit.

From the service manual, it appears that 1666 indicates the 4WAS front actuator is to blame and the C1686 code is just relating to the C1666 as a test failure.

Anyone had experience with this? a quick search didn't find much.

Could be unrelated, but could also be a torn wheel speed sensor cable or damage to one.

possibly. As long as it's a problem related to going off-road, i'm covered.

hopefully not something related to the rear wheels, etc... but the codes appear to be about the front part of the 4was system.

From the service manual, sounds like it's a busted actuator or just needs a re-alignment.

service manual:
C1686 4WAS MAIN CONTROL UNITDescription INFOID:0000000000958813
• It transmits the value calculated by 4WAS main control unit to 4WAS front control unit with 4WAS communi-
cation line (line for 4WAS system). 4WAS front control unit controls 4WAS front actuator according to the
received command value

C1668 LOCK HOLDER GAP DETECT
• Wiring connected to 4WAS front actuator is integrated with 4WAS front actuator.
• 4WAS front actuator rotates together with steering wheel.
• 4WAS front actuator mainly consists of five components.[4WAS front lock solenoid valve (lock structure),
front wheel steering angle sensor, 4WAS front motor, gear shaft, and spiral cable]
- 4WAS front lock solenoid valve (lock structure) is controlled by the 4WAS front control unit, and locks/
unlocks 4WAS front actuator.
- If a strong force (rotation direction) is applied to 4WAS front actuator, the locking mechanism (holder)
absorbs the force and locks 4WAS front actuator.
- Front wheel steering angle sensor detects a turning angle of 4WAS front motor.
- 4WAS front motor controls number of revolutions by a command value from the 4WAS front control unit.
- Gear shaft is an output axis of 4WAS front motor.(Gear shaft = 4WAS front motor revolution + steering
angle)
- Spiral cables mean the power line and signal lines of 4WAS front motor

infiniti confirmed my diagnosis.

4WAS actuator has failed... $2k repair!!!!

they wouldn't state it was 100% due to the accident either, so now it's a crap shoot as to whether the INS will cover the repair bill.

so the dealer is claiming is something slightly different, i.e not the steering column or the actuator, but the controller and ecu. They're stating they don't think it could be caused by the accident. freaking bs. of course it was! i went offroad, got pulled out, and suddenly I have steering issues. go figure.
