I'm looking for some opinions, at the moment I have a 2006 G35x a few years ago used by an owner that didn't care for it at all and its coming up with more and more problems. I want to know if its worth it to upgrade to the 2007-2008 series? is there a way of having a different head unit in as well as the stock? I just think its kind of on the smaller side but not too bad if i am not able to. Juat want some opinions from current owners thank you.
Mechanically the '07-'08 has a "better" motor, the VQ35HR does have it's quirks and issues however so do a little google research on the differences between it and the VQ35DE (non-rev up) that you currently have. Chassis they are basically the same, interior revisions were minimal and I don't consider there to be any difference between the quality of interior materials, layout, ergonomics, etc.
The HR -might- be considered slightly more reliable but the problems they have tend to be more involved then the typical cam/crank sensor issues that the DE has once mileage is higher.
If you were looking for a more reliable and all around "better" (but ugly AF imo) then you should look at the 2008+coupe / 2009+sedan G37. The platform was entirely revised and the VQ37VHR motor is pretty much superior to the VQ35##, same with the transmissions in both AT and 6MT variants. However the pricetag usually reflects the overall better build quality and quality of life improvements, if you planned on keeping the vehicle for 5+ years and pay to maintain your vehicle when things break then you should seriously consider the G37, those repair bills add up QUICKLY and paying +$5-7k now to get into a decent G37 will likely offset the amount you will spend in repairs for a G35 in the long run.
If you don't ever want to worry about vehicle repairs and have a decent job you can also consider leasing a vehicle, sure you don't actually OWN a car but for under $300 for the next 3 years you can be driving a brand new Q60 and never pay a dime in repairs...
Many options, chose wisely.
