Coolant on rack and pinion
Coolant on rack and pinion
Hello guys, first off thanks for this forum. Lots of useful info. I've never made a thread before but I'm desperate and confused, so please bare with me.
2007 G35 base sedan.
So last Friday my car started smoking, and my car turned off. I got it towed to my house. I started the car to see where smoke was coming from. The alternator was smoking and not spinning. So I bought a new alternator and belt, and installed them.
Put everything back together and the car seriously started driving better than ever. So yesterday as I'm driving, smoke starts coming out from the engine again. This time from the drivers side closer to the firewall. I took off the plastic engine cover and could see the smoke coming from around the manifold area towards the bottom of the car. I noticed the coolant level was a little low. I got underneath the car this morning and the rack and pinion on the drivers side is covered in coolant. (Note: I had the water pump replaced about 5 months ago and haven't had a cooling issue since.)
Does anyone have any idea where the coolant leak could be coming from? Also, is this random? Or does changing the alternator and belt have anything to do with this? ( I removed the coolant tank and radiator hose to get to the alternator).
Thanks in Advance to anyone who can help me out.

Unless you nicked a coolant hose, changing the alternator and belt shouldn't cause a leak. I'm willing to bet you didn't put something back on all the way. Go back and make sure you didn't put a clamp on too loose, or neglected to put one on at all. Retrace your steps.
Thanks guys, I found the leak. Its on one of the heater hoses. There's a small rubber hose that connects between two copper hoses. Just having a really hard time trying to get the clamp off of it. Doesn't seem that changing the alternator has anything to do with it. Just a coincidence I guess.
All good now. I hope. Only odd thing now, is that my ac only blows cold air when set at 60 degrees. I always would leave it at 70. But even if its at 62, it blows hot. Any ideas on this? Thanks again.
