Just Picked up Salvage G35

2008 G35X....$750 from state farm in an online auction. 150k miles w Tech package. Auto. Was leased and has the record of every oil change and everything done to it. Side impact on pass. side. both doors shot, and curtain and seat air bag went off. I cut the airbags out, and patched it all up. Replaced the doors with junkyard doors for $750. I want the rest of the airbags to work of course. Do I need a new airbag module or whatver you call it? Sorry for the silly question. I am keeping this car for myself for the record and have already driven it around and really love it!!

That's a good deal if it's repairable! Is your title marked "Salvage" ?

Curious about transfer of title from "salvage" to "prior salvage" from state to state because I'm getting ready to build a salvage car and go through the process. Here in Missouri I have to fill out a form with receipts of every part replaced and then set up an appointment with the state patrol for a inspection where they check all ID numbers of the car to sign off for the "Prior" paperwork.

I picked up my 08' G35x from Oklahoma from somebody that flips insurance cars to "Prior salvage" and they don't have to do near what most states if the car is 10 years or older.

Good deal. 750 for the car . 750 for most doors. Probably a few hundred more for extra parts. And a few hundred to paint and blend. Good Job Brandon man.

You're going to want to replace all the airbags that popped. Then once all your electrical is complete and connected you should look for a electronics specialist who can reprogram everything for an extra few hundred. In my city they "reprogram" odometers and they're very busy lol

Standard stuff. They want to cut down on crime and stolen parts. You have to prove where every part came from.

Once your car is 100% complete, They'll look over the car for a couple minutes, flip through your paperwork and you're now legal and road ready after you pay their fees.

The "alternative" way to do it in my city is to cross provincial lines , where they have an entirely different system and don't even speak the same language. Playing around transferring titles back and forth, the salvage car suddenly has a "clean title" and is ultimately worth more. Sneaky and unfortunately super common.

Thank you! Picking up the doors now, which I was so lucky, I found them both in grey, the same color as the car! The car does have a salvage title yes. I do not mind registering the car as a salvage though since I will be the one driving it! Haha. Good luck with yours! EDIT: just researched the laws here in CT, and I have to build it back properly and then get it inspected. SHould be easy enough since it was just the doors and side airbags. Fingers crossed haha.

Oklahoma has gotten to be nuts. I grew up there and my family still lives there. I don't think they have any safety inspection requirements any more. Not that I'm all for big government or anything but if there aren't any laws regarding what kind of jalopies can be driven, you end up with some pretty sketchy vehicles tooling around.

I know! I was really surprised how they can just flip a salvage car back to prior and not even inspect it haha... Kinda makes me want to get a Oklahoma address or PO box hmmmm...

@ Brandon - Most states require the title to get changed to prior salvage and you can not plate or drive a "Salvage" status car legally. Can't insure it either.

I have since learned this haha. It should be fine though. We already fixed both doors, the car looks perfect. I know this will be frownd upon however, I am keeping this car for myself, and I do not care about the seat airbag that went off. Can II just stitch that seat back up and then be on my way? Is there a way to turn off the airbag light even though an airbag has been deployed and not fixed? I just cut it out. Thanks in advance. CT requries I tow the car to the dmv and then they just do a visual inspection. A 3.3 ohm resistor would work, but I am not sure where the wires are on the headliner airbag. I think in the C pillar. The car has already has the new doors on, so I am just needing to figure this part out! Maybe I am being ridiculous and should just replace the airbags lol.

If the airbags are like the detonators in the front seat belts they have a certain resistance until a hard front accident and then they are dead shorted after they blow. I only know the front seat belt resistance from the time I had to replace my belts and bags on the 08'.

So what does that mean exactly haha? What do I need to do, outside of replacing the bags, to get the airbag light off? The light does not blink, it just stays on. If my ONLY other option is to replace the seat and headliner airbags, then I will do so, in that case I need 2 bags, and a new airbag control module? Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to get this taken care of asap!

Ok, I know you said you don't care about those bags but until they're replaced that entire system is dead, it's basically turned off so the remaining bags won't work either.. That being said the seat belts will work as normal the only exception to that might be the shoulder harnesses. If any are stretched out and will not retract then the pre-tensioner is blown and you'll have to replace it.(harness side only) It will work like a non-airbag harness if it isn't blown as the inertia reel is a separate function. Other than that to kill the light you'll either have to remove the bulb or figure out what wire to snip. Personally I'd just eye the salvage yards as my local pull a part has 5 2005's on the lot so they're starting to show up and replace them. Good luck, sounds like a nice car. Oh, I can'tremember their name but there is a company in Florida, I believe that can reset those control modules if you send them yours but you'd still need the bags.

Thank you for the reply, and the help! I have pics if anyone wants me to post them. The seatbelts are all fine thankfully. I just want to register it as soon as possible, and then fix the bags, but that is the impatient person in me. Are the airbags universal from 05 to 08? I need 2008. Anyone have knowledge on how to cut that airbag light wire ? Haha
EDIT: Ok, I caved and found bags for $75 for the seat, and $89 for the roofbag. SO , now all I need is a new module and then I will be good to go?

Which bags are you missing, Is it just the curtain bag above the door and the one in the front seat? I maybe able to check it with a parts guy I know.

I ended up just getting a seat for $120 in great condition! So I just need the module now I believe!

That's a great deal on a seat. The curtain bag and the control module from a 07-10 is what fits it.
