Battery drain and noise
Battery drain and noise
Hi,
My battery drains in a few days and I think it's due to some noise behind the battery.
Every 20 seconds or so I hear a whine/buzz sound behind the battery.
2008 G35. Video attached.
Any ideas?
Thanks

That noise is the throttle body motor adjusting the butterfly. That noise is always heard when ignition is turned off. The throttle body butterflies are doing a final open and close.
Look at the videos in Post #23 in my thread: Long cranking times
What you need to do is check online for a ECM firmware update, that will most likely fix any issue. Thread: Guide for Reprogramming Updates to your ECU

Did you check online if your ECM firmware is up to date? If it's up to date, then most likely you'll have a faulty t-body. The ECM is trying to reset it for next engine start and if it can't then it is probably trying to do it over and over.. You'll never figure out the way Nissan engineers design weird ways to do things on their cars.
The parasitic draw is gonna be up to 500mA for up to 10 minutes after ignition off, at least in my 07 V36, then should drop down to 75mA or less.

I did not check about updates. Car is with my son now at school. When he comes home for winter break I will.
The sound in the video sounds exactly like it but it comes from behind the battery not from the throttle body.
It does this when the car is off sitting but not sure if it stops after 10 minutes. I will have to check. The car battery, which is new, dies after sitting for 5 or so days.

There is really nothing behind the battery that can make that noise, unless someone wired a tracking device or something that shouldn't be there. There are few relays inside the fuse box LEFT of the battery so you need to remove the battery cover, then the battery i believe and you'll see a black box left of the battery. It's secured by 2 clips, unclip it and pull up. It's a fuse box with a fat wiring harness. Leave that outside and reconnect the battery to see if it's coming from there..
The other thing that could make noise is the BCM that's located in passenger kick panel. Remove the plastic cover and you'll see a black box, that's the BCM. If your sunroof drains are plugged up, then it could of gotten wet. See if there's any 'wetness' in that area or smell of wet rag and surface rust around the grounding bolts. Other than this, i have nothing else..

Your IPDM box is located right by the battery. Its full of relays and fuses. You probably have a bad relay that is buzzing constantly. Thats what you are hearing. That would also explain the .25 amp draw when the car is off…which is pretty excessive and will drain your battery in a couple hours.

I made a mistake. The sound is indeed coming from thw passenger side throttle body. I assume it is bad? It makes the wining sound every now and then but it doesn't stop until the battery dies.
Do you have a suggestion for an aftermarket throttle body? Rockauto has several aftermarket choices
Looks easy to replace.
thanks
