proximity feature of the Intelligent Key stopped working

I have a 2008 G35 sedan, and I am happy with it. However, my car "downgraded" the use of remotes.
What IS working:
- remotes (I have 2 fobs) can unlock and lock the car using buttons on the remote (Intelligent Key)
- push button start (on the dash) works when the remote is in the car
What broke:
- I cannot lock or unlock the car by pushing the button on the door handle. The only way to get into the car is by using the buttons on the remote.

I verified that both remotes have good battery. They both behave the same way. This car has door handle buttons on 2 doors (drivers and passenger front), and neither works. Is there an extra sensor on the outside that is communicating with the remotes? I know there must be one inside (that talks to the remote when the start button is pushed). I am not sure if it is the sensor or if the system needs some re-programming.

This is not a major problem but I'd like to get it fixed. Do you have some recommendation on what to check or try? Can I repair it myself or do I need to visit the dealer? Is there some other way of fixing this? Thanks!

Those buttons go through the BCM so checking for fault codes would be the first step.
Here, get your factory service manual and start reading.

Hey did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same issue on my car. First instinct was to check fuses and battery but they seem good.

If it helps, I notice that if you drive the car and then pull the key out and turn it off, but you don't open the door or lock it (put the car to sleep) you can start the car up again without inserting the key in the slot.

The V36 don't have ignition keys, we have key fobs. You're referring to V35 G35s. There is a feature in these cars to turn on or off the outside door handle button entry. I know i have that feature and have it set to ON.

I am referring to the V36 (second gen, 07 G35x) with the push to start, apologies for any confusion

I'm having the issue of NONE of the exterior proximity buttons working (door handles, trunk) and the push to start doesn't work unless the key is in the slot on the left by the controls for the trunk popper and AFS. However the car will start up without the key in the slot if you drive it but don't put the car into sleep mode by opening/locking a door. I also did try messing with the settings in the navigation for intelligent access ON/OFF, that didn't make a difference though.

In that case, i would recommend reprogramming the key fobs and if that doesn't fix it then your BCM decided to retire.. If you have a decent scan tool, then you can run NATS checks to see what's wrong. Not uncommon for these BCMs to stop working out of random, mine decided to stop giving me ACC power all together..

Here, get your Factory Service Manual
