But here's another perspective on the power.
For 2007 ALL car engines must be certified under the NEW SAE standards.

Well, the 265 hp rating for the Nissan Maxima with our current 3.5 VQ
is now rated at 255 hp and 252 tq

If the new VQ is indeed 310-312 hp that's a respectable power increase with no increase in displacement.
...and, according to someone who saw a new print ad for the '07 M45, it's V8 engine is now rated at 325HP under the new SAE standards, instead of 335HP. So, if the new '07 G35 Sedan will actually be rated at 310HP, that's only 15HP less than the M45's 4.5L V8!!!

Personally, I think Infiniti is making a mistake by not tweaking the M45's V8 engine. While the M45 gets bumped down to 325HP, it's new, little brother with "80% new engine parts" gets bumped up to "over 300HP." In addition, the new G35 will cost about $20k less and offer much of the same high-tech goodies as it's big brother (and even some new gadgets that the M45 doesn't have at least until possibly MY '08).

I wouldn't worry about the "M" and the 4.5 liter engine.

Obviously the new 3.5 liter will go into the
M35 as well, making it very close in performance to the
more powerful, but heavier M45.
You can bet for 2008 the 4.5 liter will get a redo and I'd
expect in the range of 360 hp from it.
It HAS to in order to stay competitive in that $50-60K sport sedan market.

It's all about marketing. Infiniti wants gobs of people to buy the new G35 and
M35 with the new motor. They'll gladly let the sales of the M45 slip for a year while racking up sales of the other two cars. Then boost up the M45 sales for 2008 and let the sales pick up for that car.

In addition to the others, the V8 is in a different league in terms of torque and smoothness. The paper #s might not show it, though on the road it's pretty obvious. From a rest, a revised 310hp VQ might put up similar #s.
However, put some people in there and then it will be back to normal with the V8 showing it's strengths.
I've been super impressed with Nissan's V8s- (except for the redesigned Q in the mid to late 90s)
They don't have the highest HP in class- They do have excellent driving characteristics-In practice, they work very well.
Marketing is one thing, how it works in real life is another.

306hp puts it exactly with the IS350! the tq rating is a bit less though but the 7.5k redline is sweet.

my next car choices just got harder to choose from!

Sure, gas prices irritate me, but that's all. I have not changed my driving habits at all. I still drive 20+ miles *one way* just to get friggin starbucks, several times a week. I put as many miles on my car per week now as I did 8 years ago when gas prices locally were $1.10 and I drove a dodge colt that got over 30mpg average.

The cost of gas, for my family, is little more than an inconvenience. The fact of the matter is, if my personal finances get crunched that badly, I'll like drop something like the HD portion of my cable service, or scale back to fewer mobile minutes, or each out one or two fewer times a month than I do now, rather than change my driving habits.

The fact is, if one is truly concerned about gas prices, he has three options: consume less(change habits/lifestyle), change vehicles, or get over it. Which are *you* going to do?

EXACTLY!!

public transportation anyone??
Isn't this a LUXURY car forum?
how about buying a nissan or toyota and use the savings on gas?

If I'm not mistaken, the new maxima only has a CVT as it's sole transmission. It also has a reduced redline of 6300rpm. I heard that this was done because the CVT couldn't handle the 6800rpm redline. I think this is the reason for the power drop.

But according to this on Nissan's own site... It says 335hp, with a star next to it. Then if you scroll down, it says it was measured with SAE J1349 Aug2004 standard. Which would mean, the 335 figure still holds under the revised standard. It also shows the VQ as still being 280 under this same standard.

Tho the 298hp VQ is still measured under the old 1995' standard.

Much ado about HP

Don't know why everyone is sooooo concerned over the '07s HP rating. I would rather it have a little less if it made the car more drivable over the entire rev range that I would be using on a daily basis. Remember this is a everyday car, not an exotic or even a sports car.

Exactly - 300 HP is plenty, this is not a Porsche. How about some decent gas mileage somewhere in the mid 20's like the rest of the competition in it's class.

If they plan on doing both, we'll then all the better.

Yesterday I had an oil change appointment at my G dealer (they also fixed my breaks.........covered by waranty ) Spoke with a manager also and he told me that is it official that new sedan is going to be 310 will be rolling in at the end of september/begining of november
And I told him that they better put something crazy in the coupe cuz this is insane for sedan, And he told me that lots of coupe owners are not too happy with sedans hp being bigger then coupes and he also told me that infiniti is not going to let them down , I asked him if he knows anything about a coupe yet and he told me, He's exact words " I cant say anything right now but you won’t be disappointed with a new coupe, just wait it’s going to worth it" <<< who knows what that was, maybe he does know something or maybe not but it looks like infiniti playing hide and seek game, They wait for everyone to reveal their goods and then they come out and drop a bomb. So let’s hope that we are in for a helll of a ride.

Remember guys, Infiniti already trademarked the names "M37 and FX37" but not G37. So instead of getting the new 3.5 VQ in the 07 G, they will most likely get a 3.7 to set it apart from the G and justify the higher price. Of course, the v8 will be tweaked correspondingly. Also, as a note, the current 06 G is now rated at 275 hp per 2006 SAE standards. tq is down to 268 from 270. In the manual ver. hp is now rated at 293 and tq is 258, down from 298 and 260, repectively. This figures are official from Infiniti.

That's cool, at least they were only off by 5 hp, still feels the same to me.

Where did you hear or read this? I have searched infiniti.com and infinitihelp.com, but could not find anything like it. Even the infinitit.com spec page on the Q mentions that its HP rating will be less in the new SAE standard, but does not give the new figure.
