Good write up Muscarel. I agree...those of us who enjoy the Infiniti brand should expect to get trounced every now and then. It's going to happen...Win some, lose some. However with this new G37 I don't expect to lose them all. The 335 got a nice cool day of testing while the G was 20 degrees warmer. EDMOND SUCKS!!!

First they tested the cars in different conditions , second they tested the G with 4 WAS and with navi which adds weight to the car , while the 335i was tested without active steering and navi which will reduce the 335i Weight .. Thats BS !!!

Edmunds Review = "Faulty Logic"

I think the 'Edmunds gang' should be taken to task for using 'faulty logic' in their BMW-G37 comparo. No matter which car were to "win," results will be skewed.

I have lost faith in Edmunds over time and tend to 'trust' Automobile magazine (and Winding Road) more than others running in the car-test "game." FWIW, I'd like to see a common-sense comparo between the two cars, with individual testers given the space to state their "subjective" conclusions. This is already done to some extent in sidebars and individual commentaries in some mags. To readers and 'enthusiasts' alike, properly directed subjective commentary appears to carry a lot of weight. Edmunds needs to do a rerun with apologies to their audience for doing such an "El Crappo" review/comparo.

Magazines are under great pressure to tighten up copy to make room for advertisers -- every line saved is "precious." I worked in the field for a number of years and can say that space constraints are a royal PITA, and one reason articles can't go deeper per the wishes of those who report on and write them. Enough of my verbosity, but I think Winding Road articles show the reuslts of giving more breathing room to the subjects at hand.

No matter which car you buy or lease, BMW 335i, or Infiniti G37, don't lose sight of the fun factor and just how different these great cars are from the hordes of run-of-the-mil SLUGS we see on the road every day!!

dunno any of u notice this stated on the bottom of first page "The manufacturers provided Edmunds these vehicles for the purposes of evaluation."

u guys have to understand, car testers cant get test cars ANY way they want them to be equipped at ANY time they want. they test WHAT they get WHEN they get it. therefore IMO Edmunds should not take the blame for not getting a base G37 or a fully loaded 335i. IMO this test is pretty fair, and u G37 fanboys should be happy that it only lost by so little because 335i is a car thats pretty darn hard to beat.

BMW vs. Infiniti (my take)

I finally had to register for this site so I could post some of my thoughts that don't seem to get mentioned enough on here. Every BMW vs. Infiniti review and comparison or post on this board talks about numbers like 0-60 times, 1/4 miles, steering feel, handling, etc. While it can be fun to focus on these facets of a performance coupe, my decision to trade in my 2001 BMW 325Ci for a new G37 is going to boil down to 2 things:

1) A comparably equipped G will cost anywhere from $5K to $15K less than the BMW. I plan to get a G37 journey sport + premium, which would still have me in 328i territory, not 335i territory. Frankly I don't G.A.S. how a G37 stacks up to a 335i, because I don't have $50K to drop on a 335i as I'm only 26 years old. To me, it's all about G37 vs. 328i, because that is the real world choice that I have. Those of you with more money than me might feel differently, of course.

2) Maintenance and reliability. I have loved my E46 3 series coupe. It handles great and drives smooth, and I have enjoyed it immensly for the past 7 years and 84K miles (as of today). It has also given me just about every problem you can imagine in the way of build quality issues and has ultimately cost me a small fortune to service and repair since my warranty ended. I am planning to get rid of it before the next big thing can go wrong.

So there it is. I'm ready to own a Japanese built car because I no longer trust German reliability. I prefer to give up the BMW paid maintenance covereage in order to gain the longer Infiniti warranty and the 6 yr/70K mile powertrain coverage. I don't care if the G37 gets "second place" to the BMW 335i in ever comparison test between now and then end of the model run. I will be lining up to give Infiniti my hard earned money for a new G37, because I'm sick and tired of giving my hard earned money to the BMW service department.

In the end, these are both amazing cars. Let's just all step back and take a moment to appreciate the fact that our lives are so great that we can actually focus on things as trivial as what performance luxury sport coupe we want to buy next!!! HA! God Bless America happy 4th!!!

Edmunds sucks. I bet they used two different drivers, one for each car. Things like braking, acceleration and slalom need a good driver to eke out the best results, and we obviously got the worst driver. Watch the quarter mile runs for example... the G gets zero clutch drop and there's only the faintest tire squeal on any of its runs, whereas the BMW gets a hard launch as evidenced by the right amount of tire squeal. The whole comparo is oozing with bias.

Edmunds sucks, plain and simple.

As for cornering, even BMW owners on their own forums admit that inside-tire spin is a problem at the limit -- whereas we have limited slip differentials in our G's. Given their obvious pro-BMW bias, I could understand if Edmunds downplayed that deficiency in the Bimmer, but the article doesn't even mention it!

I think it's inexcusable to lack an LSD at their price-point, but it's even more inexcusable for a so-called "comprehensive review" to not mention the fact that Bimmers lack them, and G's have them.

Yep, some of us post thoughts along this line from time to time, but they usually get burried by more "important" performance discussions. I'm in your camp Bulldawg. I'll take the luxury over performance this time around and this new G will be a tremendous value. If it sounds as exotic in real life as some of the videos I will be happy cruising around town in style. Glad to have you aboard!

If the view out of the car wasn't as exciting (they compared the G to a ferrari), then it's because BMW is "down to business". The BMW steering ratio is not as aggressive as the Inifniti's, but it "felt" like it was. The G had a "relative lack of high end vigor" but then they show a dyno that reveals the G is making 30-40 more lb-ft of torque at redline. The G doesn't like to change direction but it achieved a 2 mph higher slalom and they themselves mention when talking about the 335 "the limits are very approachable and can't be pushed with comfort. Ultimately, the 335i is not as comfortable in fast transitions as the G37." Where was that in the review?

I also like how they said on two occassions that they dyno'd the cars because they couldn't explain the performance difference between the G and 335. And they discovered that the 335 was underrated. Meanwhile, Edmunds has already written multiple articles about this. How fake.

All that being said, outside of the straight line stuff, the rest was all subjective (even when their objective tests told them otherwise). Which could be genuine. If the people driving the cars happened to like the BMW better (maybe they just prefer the German-esque feel of the BMW), then that will come out in their review. I would use this test more for the data that they collected than anything else. Everyone should drive the car and decide for themselves. As an example: I've driven a 2007 G35 Sedan and was as impressed with it as I was the 335 I test drove. One of the things I didn't like about the 335 was the clutch engagement. I learned later on these forums that BMW has what they call a clutch delay valve that makes for awkward hard shifting. But Edmunds said the clutch engagement is smooth. That part of the review alone made me realize how different people's opinions of one thing could be. Where I saw the clutch engagement as a big disappointment on the 335, they saw it as smooth.

Just wanted to add - Edmunds might be biased, but then again, so might Motor Trend. Ultimately, it is a personal choice. These are both fantastic cars - one perhaps being more driver oriented at the sacrifice of technology, ergonomics, cost and reliability. Depending on how one prioritizes these items, will affect their own purchase choice. I can't wait to test drive these two back to back.
Excellent post, muscarel. It does seriously seem that Edmunds WANTED the 335i to win. The comparison test is really not objective at all.

1) a couple of us have also highlighted that the G37 should have been compared to the 328i from the price point of view. Some of us are not made of money, so $10K is not chump change.

2) leasing the 335i is the way to go as you would not have to worry about service cost (seems like most are going this route). As for me, I keep my car well pass the warranty period, so reliability is a must. For example, my 1990 300zx, in 17 years, needed a) a 60K major tune up, b) the brake fluid reservoir replaced, c) a new plastic shifter bushing, and c) a new radiator drain cap. That is reliability (hmm....hope I did not jinks my car).

Meanwhile, (and Picus may disagree) the bimmer forums are active with discussions on issues like fuel pump, oil cooler, 5/6 cylinder cooling issues.

I am still looking hard at both choices, but the reliability factor of the 335i scares me.
