Infiniti G37 too heavy? Maybe not !

I was on the bandwagon with everyone else re the G37 s weight. Then I read the Motortrend article on the new M3. All through out the article they talk about cf roof platic fenders and various aluminum parts. I'm expecting to see a car at maybe 3100 lbs and this happens:

2008 BMW M3
Base price $63,000 (est)
Vehicle layout Front engine, RWD, 4-pass, 2-door coupe
Engine 4.0L/414hp/295lb-ft DOHC 32-valve V-8
Transmission 6-speed manual
Curb weight 3641lb (mfr)
Length x width x height 181.7 x 71.0 x 56.1 in
0-60 mph 4.6sec (MT est)
EPA city/hwy fuel econ N/A
CO2 emissions N/A
On sale in U.S. Spring 2008

Relative to the competion (in terms of performance): it looks like Infiniti didn't do such a bad job after all. The gains in performance and character seem to align themselves more with the M3 than the 335i.

the cars are the same weight...

I wanna see "the M3 is not a sports car its a GT" comment. If the comment doesn't apply please tell me why. By all accounts the G37 handles extremely well. The main diffence between the two cars is power and $21000.

(Sure there maybe other intangables but we don't know what they are yet.)

The G37 in the 335i vs G37 MotorTrend Videos by all accounts appeared to be flying around that track and the driver even said the word ROCKET. Not indicative of a pig.

Quite frankly, he indicated that the G seemed to be more performance oriented and thrashy, while the BMW was more quiet and compliant.

THIS G IS NOT A PIG.

Without a doubt, the GT-R will be slaughtering the M3.

Bad comparison. 1st of all, the M3 has a V8. 2nd of all, the M3 is backing that weight with 414hp!

The G37 is a pig. almost 3800lbs on a RWD ONLY car with forged aluminum suspension and aluminum hood is a discrace.

The M3 has a carbon fiber roof and a +$20k stipend over the G37, which should be used for weight-saving materials, but still weighs almost 3700 lbs. I see that as a disgrace for the E90 M3, when the E36 M3 came in at 3100 lbs.

I'd have to say a slightly modded 335 ( procede + exhaust + LSD) is a better buy then the new M3..IMO

well the m3 has more than just speed i was reading in an article about the suspenision how its supposed to be better and all the technology thats going into it like the m button in the m5 and m6. this car will be a beast and we all know how bmw underestimates its 0-60 times and quarter miles, and yes you can go but a nissan or a chevy, but for all that the new m3 will be packing i will go with the bmw, as long as it comes with lsd cause i know the 335 doesn't and thats the only flaw with that bmw

I think what is more interesting is to figure out why the M3 is heavier than the 335i. From edmunds, "the new V8 is actually 33 pounds lighter than the inline-6 it replaces".. so I dont think the gain is from the engine. And we know its already trimming off weight in areas like the roof, etc.
So where is it all coming from? Larger wheels/brakes? LSD?
Perhaps understanding this might help understand why the G37 is such a pig.. >shrug<
