For me, any kind of coupe...gotta be a Manual Transmission. With the G37...just don't seem right driving an auto. Matter of fact, wouldn't seem right on any sport car...Z, Eclipse, WRX, even a Civic SI or a Scion TC. Imagine driving an automatic on those cars. That's what turned me off to the IS350. Only reason it's a llittle ok...is cuz it has 4 doors. But the IS might as well be a coupe with that little a$$ back seat. I live in Orange County where traffic is crazy...but you're used to it....it's normal..and it definitely would deter me from getting a 6MT. My boys would simply laugh if I got an automatic for a 330hp car.

 

Woodbridge, New Jersey: I really feel for you man! Those malls and the nasty Route 1 corridor to and from NY Metro area are NIGHTMARES. I have family in Iselin; 'nuff said. For all you guys/gals who have not been in NJ places like Rahway, Woodbridge and other towns not far from NYC, let me say they are just awful. LA and Atlanta now have competition in spades.

I understand need for auto trannys, but my new G37S will be 6MT. We have traffic in Coastal Georgia, but it pales in comparison to Atlanta, where all the drivers are crazies! Oh, BTW, Boston has some of the WORST traffic congestion in USA. Sorry to go off-topic ... couldn't resist.

 

i live in the central jersey and route 9 route 18 is a b*tch but i still chose stick just for those times at like 2 in the morning when your theonly person on the road down shifting, rev matching, sooo much fun. i hate seeing other g's or z's for that matter in auto. It makes me feel like that person is lazy and doesn't want to get the most of their cars buying my 6mt was the first car i paid for by myself and i wanted to enjoy every second im in it wheather im cruising or chripin 1st through 3rd. Can you chirp tires in auto?? i mean like 2nd and 3rd??

 

if u live in a heavy populated area i can understand wanting a auto, simply b/c of ease and it more relaxing. to have an auto in places like san fran where there are many up and down hill is just smart. i remeber a freid of mine that lived in an area with hilss adn traffic light adn people use just roll back all the time and hit him. its also the american way to have things easy and not to do more then is required if avail. back in the days when the first auto trannys came out it was the shyt to have b/c that meant u spent some money for luxury adn to have a automatic car. i think that ideas stuck around.

 

I think it's just more about laziness than luxury these days. lol

If I were to get an AT, I think I would've opted out for a sedan instead. I cannot stand driving a coupe with an AT. It takes the fun and youth out of the car.

 

I could never see me not driving a MT. well maybe if I lived in LA (the traffic there drives me crazy).
Even when my second son was born, I traded in my 350Z, for an acura TL -Manual. I thought with 270 hp, and mostly highway driving, I could be an adult and live with front wheel drive-
I was WRONG!! I hate FWD. (sorry for the drift)
but my last 8 cars have been MT.

I live in Houston, where owning a car is mandatory. I've always had a MT, and always will.

I even had to evacuate Houston(against my will) when hurricane Rita came through in 2004, and I admit it was not fun using a clutch for 3+ hours to go 9 miles. If anything my clutch suffered the most. Fortunately it only took us 9 hours to get to San Antonio, normally a 3 hour trip but most people spent 20-28 hours to do the same trip due to traffic, but I actually drove toward the coast to hit all the back roads...and it worked!

 

All great responses but I wish someone would stick to the original question and would describe how the G37's 6MT feels when compared with G35's. I have read somewhere that the manual transmission was improved "immeasurably" and I would love to hear some feedback from the G35 drivers.

 

I think you did not read that the sample G37's at the dealerships are all AT. Without G37S 6MT sample models to test drive, how would we know from our own experience that MT has improved or not?

 

I think you missed the word "almost" which comes right before your word all.

There's got to be a 6MT out there somewhere, sure it's not easy to find but should be possible especially since it's been test driven on the U.S. soil and if somebody could share their experience with it this would be an excellent thread otherwise there are about one billion threads in here that discuss the topic of manual vs. auto.

i really dont think MT is all that bad in traffic, as a matter of fact i feel auto is worse since most likely you keep your foot on the brakes most of the time which can be straining.
I'm usually in neutral during traffic or just playing with the clutch and gas which actually keeps me busy, i just dont mind it.

 

You do know that you can put an AT in neutral as well right?

As for the MT, if you have time to play with the clutch in traffic, then that's not really traffic imo. Traffic to me is when you have to move your car forward inch-by-inch in bumper to bumper traffic every few seconds. In that kind of situation, one is constantly disengaging/engaging the clutch which is incredibly annoying and tiring.
