Darned impact... do i need a new one?

Lately my gun, a $40 Craftsman, can't seem to loosen lugs. I'm on it for 10 whole seconds and it just keeps hammering.

I then bust out the wrench and got the lugs off with relative ease, even on those that i didn't touch with the impact. I checked the torque on all of them prior and it's at 80ft. lbs.

There are no leaks either.

Is this gun just totally underpowered?

if its one of those battery powered mini guns, you're probably just outta juice or the motors going out. You need to get one of those big guys. Don't know what they're called, my homie has one, he calls it "bubba". Haha

If your Air Impact wrench won't loosen a nut that you can by hand, it's likely defective. Just take it back to Sears as they are usually good at exchanging Craftsman products.

I had the exact same thing. those impact guns suck, I had a big air compressor with plenty CU and ever after messing with the airflow and so on, there was no improvement, I just went out and bought a Milwaukee impact wrench gun for $200 over 320lbs of torque and runs of household electricity.

Affirmative, found that out this morning. Sounds like she's just old and tired, Mike.

Thanks guys, i went ahead and replaced the unit above with a slightly better model. It seems to work, taking only about 5 seconds to loosen. It's also quite a bit quieter. Wish it was faster though

The Sears people were certainly very understanding about it.
