Can Headers Cause CELs?
I am still trying to find the root of my CELs codes P1273 and P1283.
Could they be related to Strup headers being installed? I forgot if I had them before I installed the headers, but I am about ready to put the factory manifolds back on the car.
Someone told me that these CELs are related to the upstream O2 sensor which actually affects drivability (I get 15 mpg lately). It is located where the header meets the engine, so this is why I think it might be causing trouble.
I just want to make sure before I swap the manifold back.
Thanks.
Jason

hmm, i havent heard headers throwing lights, but im sure its possible. and im pretty sure your right, your car is running in some sort of limp mode. i would think about trying spacers(sparkplug non-foulers) on the top o2 sensors. cheapest and easiest way to trick the ecu.
what do those codes say tho??
dont rush to put nething stock back on.

Absolutely DO NOT put non-foulers on the upper O2 sensors (closest to the engine)! That is the primary closed-loop that adjusts your mix. Doing that will royally screw things up. The ONLY sensors to add non-foulers to are the ones threaded into the cats or testpipes. Those are only alarm sensors and dont actually control fuel delivery.
If you are throwing a light and you still have cats, then your mix is off due to a vacuum leak at the intake, or you are sucking air into the exhaust from a bad header install/gasket etc. If you had someone install them, take it back and have them check the bolts etc. If you did it, then you will have to diagnose yourself. But if you are getting lousy mileage, then you are rich, which means the fuel management thinks you have too much oxygen in the exhaust and is adding fuel. Makes me think you have an exhaust leak somewhere.
