Borla Exhaust Problems
Borla Exhaust Problems
For those that have upgraded to the Borla CAT back system....do your pipes rattle against part of the metal supports underneath you car. On the right pipe about under the rear seats the pipe has to go over top of a metal bar, which it rattles against sometimes. Does anyone else have this problem - if so any ideas on how to correct it. Thanks -

If the installer put the correct parts on the correct side, then it should be easy to adjust the connections to have ample clearance around that sway bar.
Mine has lots of clearance there, and no knocks or rattles anywhere else.
Look in this thread for pics of my install and you'll see the subtle differences in the 2 sides.HERE.

No rattles but a little dissappointed in sound. Just had it installed so will wait a little to break it in and see. But as of right now I can barely tell it's not stock. It's really marginal the sound difference. I wanted it at least noticeably throatier but not obnoxious. Looks like I might have to get different mufflers and weld em on at a later date.

Looking at the exahuast, you could have a problem with it rubbing with aftermarket sway bars if the shape does not match the factory bar. I started thinking about this when I put my sway bars on. Also, the larger diameter will take up some of the free space for clearance. I suspect if it is rubbing, it will be ont he passenger side at the sway bar.

You might have put the two mid pipes on the wrong side(or whomever installed it). When I put on mine I did the same thing it rattled and rubbed on both sides. Then I swithed them and it is now perfect. I have a lot of learance on both sides. The main problem is that Borla didnt label any of the pipe parts, just included a little diagram, it can be tricky.

Re: Borla Exhaust Problems
Just installed mine on Sunday, no rubbing at all. Note that the resonator which should be on the passenger side has it's exit pipe "bent up". The driver side resonator has it's exit pipe nearly straight. The parts weren't labeled but you can tell by looking at the diagram provided.
In my case the closest clearances , I note are near (under) the factory sway on the driver side and near the diff front mount on the passenger side . Both places are close but (~1/3 inch),however, under hard cornering left , right , WOT, hard downshift , nothing makes contact.
Also in order to get a good leak free clamp on the H-pipe cross section I used a C-clamp to pull the left and right together while tightneing the center clamp. I did this just after the Cat flanges were torqued .Then I tightened remaining clamps working from front to back. Also clamps shoudl be positoned to not rub or have bolt heads faceing down (could snag). After a few 100 miles I'm going back and MIG welding all the joints , then the clamps can go.

I am using the Borla cat backs and Stillen sways, no rubbing and no noise with that set up. The sway bar for the rear goes under the pipe on one side and over the pipe on the other, which is why it has that funny twist when you see it laid out on the floor for a picture.
The Borla does not produce a materially different or deeper sound all by itself, even when running FI. The stock system is pretty doggone good. But when you add a high flow cat like the Random Technology, it "releases" a lot of low gutteral mellow sound that you enjoy, plus some rumble from the headers. If you want some sound, and a few hp, check into the high flow cats. On FI it gave me almost 20hp more based on a dyno run. Partly this was the headers and cat back being freed up as well, either for the breathing bottleneck that the stock cats gave, or due to the ECU messing with the timing.
