Question about the HKS/XO2 Setup

I was just wondering what those things are that are right above the mufflers. You know what I'm talking about? Like, as the muffler starts, there is a pipe that bends up and goes up into another little bullet shaped canister or something. It seems like that would just increase back pressure or something. What does that do and why are these systems the only ones that have it?

the hks would be the only system (to my knowledge) that uses this, but XO2 is replica so that doesn't count imo..

They are resonators. They help to quiet the exhaust a bit. HKS is kinda loud but without those, it would be louder. And like dijstiiv said, X02 is a cheap replica/wannabe HKS so it doesn't count.

according to rick, they're not resonators. i believe he says that these are dead chambers - or something like that.

I think the chambers are there to create backpressure in the low rpms.

no way they're there for looks...you can barely see them from behind the car.

They may not technically be resonators but they are definitely there to deaden the noise. I remember reading an article about the exhaust a while back. I just can't find the article. They definitely serve a purpose.

no, they're not just for looks. that would seem a bit ridiculous as you can barely even see them, if at all.

I have the HKS, and I read somewhere, that they are suppose to keep the drone down.

They are not for show, cuz they are mostly behind the bumper.
