$190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Hey Guys, I have this same Y-pipe got it from the same people $220 shipped. I am very happy with it.
I love the sound just slightly deeper not much louder, and butt dyno says YES! it gives you a bit of power .I feel more of a gain here then I did my z-tube. The first two days I had I was able to chirp the 1-2 upshift. I think my ECU has adjusted as I can't do it anymore. The shop owner that did my install (local dragracer) said it was well made. Next week I am going to the drags so i will let you know if it helped

I can chirp 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd and I'm completely stock.
How does the ECU adjust to this?

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Not sure, are you 6MT? I have a 5AT w/ z-tube,19inch bbs, Brembo brakes and now y-pipe. I could only chirp the wheels once in a while. More often with my stock wheels but that could be a difference in tire. All I am saying is that for the money y-pipe is worth it. I don't want to get a whole exhaust and change the sound. Plus most gains are seen at the Y-pipe.
Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
I took 1-hour lunch break and went to a muffler shop where I know a guy to install it.
Listen to my advice, unless you have a lift, tools and metalic exhaust sealant - save yourself some frustration and take it to the muffler shop. I was charged $40 for install. Install took 25 minutes. If you DIY with jackstands - definately over an hour.
Some tips:
1. Have wooden hammer ready
2. Start your way from cats and work back, use WD40 on bolts. My friend just used welder to warm the bolts - much faster. If you're using lift - use jackstand for the unbolted portion of y-pipe.
3. Putting new y-pipe on start with cats side again. Don't try to make one side flush and than go to another. Allign both sides with cats first and than gently use wooden hammer alternating sides. This way it will seat much easier.
4. No bolts, no gaskets come with the y-pipe. Use stock bolts in front, but the rear of stock y-pipe uses studs, so you will need replacement bolts (another reason to take it to a shop).
5. Retorque all the bolts after 1-2 weeks of driving.
Impressions:
Very little audible difference - although I haven't had a chance to take it past 4k rpm. But dyno says - YES. More response down low. Again can't tell much about up top. After seeing sedan mid-pipe with my own eyes, I'm convinced that this thing HAS GOT TO GO.
The guy who was doing the work complemented on the quality of the pipe and welds and also said that it should have cost much more than I paid given the felx sections. Apparently they're PITA to make. Funny part is that without knowing much about the car the guy said "It will probably give you 5-7hp at the wheels".
Good luck.

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Thanks for your first impressions MOTOP. Interesting to hear that there's not much noticeable difference in sound, but you feel more low-end power; I wonder if the same holds true throughtout the rpm range or if there's more sound and power in the upper rpm's as well.
I just received my Coupe midpipe and will hopefully get it installed tomorrow at a muffler shop; if so, I'll post my impressions on my Coupe Midpipe on G35 Sedan thread. I suspect similar effects from the midpipe, although other people have said it provides a little deeper exhaust note, more similar to the Coupe due to a much smaller resonator and a more, straight through free flowing path. I bet it the "Coupe Midpipe and Y pipe combo" might be a real nice mod, but I may just stop at the midpipe if I get the results I'm looking for...one could go crazy with all this stuff ;-)

More impressions after taking the car on Skyline Blvd at 11pm last night.
Definately can feel gains. Not crazy but noticeable. Overall impression is that the y-pipe made engine's life much easier. I also noticed less jerking when downshifting to lower gears, engine just jumps to 4.5k rpm without jerking - definately an improvemenet in my book.
Sound is a bit deeper with slightly more vibration on higher RPMs, somewhat pleasant and definately not as obnoxious as HKS Hiper exhaust on my old 240sx.
Price/impressions ratio on thi this mod is excellent.

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Ok, so I got my Coupe midpipe installed today (see my full first impressions on my Coupe Midpipe on G35 Sedan thread)...For a G35 with stock exhaust, the Coupe midpipe absolutely provides a deeper, slightly louder exhaust note (closer to the Coupe and FX35/45), and probably adds a few HP as well. I think it was worth the $$ spent, and at this point, I don't see any reason to add the Y pipe. However, based up MOTOP's observations of this Y pipe and my observations of the Coupe midpipe, I think both are probably about equal in the positive effects they bring to a G35 Sedan with stock exhaust.

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Try taking the heatshields off the y-pipe, you will understand why it needs to go. Exhaust gases just collide from two sides - major flow restriction.

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
Yes, interesting. I'm sure exposing the stock Y pipe would show why its so restrictive. Speaking of heat shields -- I still don't get all the heat shields on the stock midpipe and just below the crankshaft...why are those necessary??? I just feel like I've done enough, especially since these muffler shops around here in S. Florida always seem to get $100 or more for every little damn installation...it's ridiculous. I hear all these other people on this Forum saying "only 20 min. and $40-$50 for installation." -- not here. Plus, so far, I like what the Coupe midpipe has done.
I would recommend the Coupe midpipe for you, MOTOP (or anyone else with a stock exhaust that's looking for a little more, deeper sound and power), if you don't mind shelling out another $300+ for an exhaust mod. I bet adding the Coupe midpipe along with the Y pipe would surely make a nice cat-back exhaust system (minus the muffler) though ;-)

Re: $190 Y-pipe group buy!!
15 min. & $40.00 later at my local Meneke......
Mine is on....and I am very HAPPY!
Motor seems to breathe easier.
Fit and finish were excellent.
But don't freak the first time you drive out and see all the smoke and that nasty smell from the new burning off.....
