Rattel noise, smell, power loss
All of a sudden since yesterday Im having some issues and Im guessing it has something to do with my Crawford HFCs???
1. Random rattling sound coming from under body passenger side. sound is not consistent.
2. Weird smell coming when Im sitting in the car and windows are down.
3. Loss of power (this one Im not 100% sure).
Any ideas what might be the issue?
Btw, its a 2006 g35 coupe 6mt

I found this...

So, that might be the rattling issue... as the rattle is not at a certain rpm or anything.
When I crank up the car, if the rattle starts then, it stays. And its LOUD!
If the rattle doesnt start when I crank up the car, it never comes.
But what about the smell???

could very well be the comb inside the cells may have cracked and gone bad. Thats the only thing i can think of that have those 3 symptoms you described.
1. Rattling Sound - Cells have cracked and the core pieces are rattling around in the converter.
2. Smell - Cracked/broken core pieces are not filtering/absorbing the exhaust which is causing it to just run straight through, hence smelling that fuel and unconverted exhaust gases
3. Loss of power - Broken Cells/core pieces could be clogging the cats which is causing the loss of power.
I remember you bought those cats used and had quite a bit of miles on them. So they could just be bad and time to replace them.

^ Yes, I asked Jake, n thats what he guessed as well.
But, wouldn't the rattle be there every time I crank up the car?
Like I said...

Could be the way the core pieces move around after driving your car around. Everytime you drive it it moves the broken pieces around and it settles differently, so sometimes loud rattles, sometimes no rattle...thats my best guess.
I would definitely check the heat shields/O2 sensor, etc and make sure nothing is loose. If it isn't those, then most likely the cats.

my passenger side did the same thing recently (20+K miles)...
I didnt notice which side your is op - but there is a used one (not broken) for sale in the marketplace... I would have bought it if I saw it before purchasing a new replacement.
eventually all hfc will go bad... most ppl say about 20K is the expected life... some get more, some get less...
