Hot air kills power on this engine.

Below is a test of changing air inlet temperatures in ~15'F increments. Hot air can easily drop 15-20 HP.

A little birddie told me the K&N panel filter with the stock air box had the best results. Looking forward to the report....

Tony Collette has been reporting that for a few years - that wouldnt be a revelation.

However, I feel it depends on the combo of mods you are running - which is why much of this test is going to be subjective.

There have been a lot of people saying that for years, and I think it still holds true on the VQ37VHR. I am not convinced that any intake is worth the money unless you are buying it for sound/looks....

not with concise dyno tests...

As with all breather mods, some areas are going to yield different than others depending on configuration... I can tell you without a doubt that the Stillen/pop charger I'm running is definitely different than OEM rev-up air box - I found this out by happenstance when car was getting a bunch of paint and body work... I intended to to do back-to-back dyno but after running the OEM box, then switch to Stillen/pop charger (to get the OEM box painted), I determined I wasnt interested in going back to OEM. (and believe me, it has nothing to do wiht sound - with headers, hfc and Stillen gen 1 exhaust, an intake isnt gonna do a damn thing sound wise to make a difference that I'm gonna hear).

One of these days when I have time to waste I'll dyno both.

But, I dont suggest it will work that way for everyone (I don't know), it just happens to work that way with the mods I have.

I agree and good points.... My 4 VQ's have all been lightly modified (no headers or cats), and I seemed to get the best results with the stock box and a good drop in filter (I did do some dyno testing on two of the cars and it seemed to back this up, but I only did testing with two intakes and stock/stillen exhaust).

I think this gets back to what has been discussed.... As interesting as this will be to see, it does not necessarily end the debate about what is best. This will tell us what is best for Rob, or possibly someone with a similar setup, and that's about all.

My two cents, after all the long, sort, twisted etc, it seems that a K&N and a Z tube would be fine and give you a nice running ride. I did the test as the guys from Motordyne quoted in their test how heat is your worst enemy. I proved that with the runs. This all is like the saying I had in my shop, you want go fast? How fast depends on how many bucks you want to spend. All this is relevant to your budget.

I will list all I did on my car so everyone can see what mods were done and not spend a ton of money, make the car run well and not go over the top. I have done a lot of cars to many different levels, some were fun, some a pain in the ***. Now I'm for a nice low maintenance fun to drive car that you don't have to worry about tuning every time you want to use it. When I finish my web site you can see the whole picture.

i got the AFE stage2 intake put on today. i like it overall minus the rubber couplers. plastic molded tube with smooth insides. takes the AFM by itself, nice looking heatshield that uses the factory intake snorkle thingy and looks to block off alot of heat from inside the bay, and uses a nice sized filter.
