Need help with used car - homemade intake (PLEASE!)

Hi guys,

I bought a used g35 coupe all stock except for a homemade intake (horrible, i know)

it was made from storm drain piping (Fernco) and it has a 3" cone filter attached to it. It is ugly, makes a dirty noise and the filter is rusting because it is right near the driver side tire (very long intake).

It appears that my stock airbox has been completely removed and I do NOT have a Mass Airflow Sensor. There is no check engine light in my car.

- THE TUBE GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN CONNECTED TO A 3" CONE .. NEAR THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE

My question to you guys who know more about cars.. How can I replace this without CEL? I do not have a MAF and therefore I believe I cannot just buy a Ztube/Popcharger combo. What can I buy that won't break the bank, be clean and safe for my engine? Keep in mind this is already aftermarket and the stock airbox seems to have been fully removed.

Did you not check before buying it? Dealer or private party?

private party. it honestly looks and sounds like a normal intake and was made according to "homemade intake DIY guides"..other than that the car is stock and runs good.. bought it off a young kid with more $ than sense..

There has to be an MAF, otherwise your car would be in limp mode. The MAF plays an important role in determining your air/fuel ratio. See that black plastic tube toward the top end of the intake? I suspect that's the MAF housing. The MAF should be plugged in there.

are you sure you dont have a MAF? its not in that piece of black plastic pipe mabe underneath? how would he have capped the hole for it and keep the ecu from throwing codes. i would go with a z-tube/popcharger combo for sure... it would work the best no problem and get rid of all that bad tubing.

if it looks and sounds like a normal intake why change it unless you go back to a stock airbox?

the filter needs to be replaced anyway, it's ugly and gives me horrible gas mileage and a constant "sucking" noise. I want to go with an OEM / clean look and stock setup.

I will take pics when I get home and look into if that black plastic pipe is the MAF. Thanks guys - I thought the MAF is usually closer to the bumper but perhaps it is relocated. It's my first car and I am learning

Contradict yourself much? lol

You are correct in that the MAF and its housing have been relocated. It's usually closer to the front.

Yeah... that black plastic piece really looks like the normal MAF housing. Good luck, man!

Here's a quick google search

I agree that it's dirty as hell. As soon as it gets a bit warmer, I plan to clean things out, replace filters + plugs, and learn more about my car in general.

As for contradicting myself..it's stupid and dirty because I am a perfectionist, but it is functional as far as an intake goes..wasn't a big enough deterrent to prevent me from buying the car.

It looks like a well done job tbh. If you're such a perfectionist, replace the couplings with fresh silicon for "the look," fab a splash shield for the filter, and paint/powder coat the metal sections black.
