I told him that I'll post this on the forum and he might be getting more calls about this, but I never discussed any discounts or anything like that. After all my whole cat-back exhaust with stock muffler will net me less than $400 including labor.

All you have to do is make proper measurements before cutting of the stock flange and replacing it with reducer cone.

Any y-pipe with a 3in outlet, could benefit from this. Our stock b-pipe in only 2.5in. At midas the tech just held up the flange & reducer cone combo. the made a mark ~ 1/2 short, he then cut the pipe with a "choker" type pipe cutter. The end of the b-pipe just snapped off. Then he simply welded it on. I kept the end of the b-pipe just in case. Glad ya'all like it.

baileyrx,

Did you polish the welds on the inside?

Great post, I just ordered one from Chuck @ Dr Gas for $35. Definitely a better solution than a replacement b-pipe!

Just had this put on by my local muffler guy, and am very happy with the results. Cleaned up the sound under throttle above 4k and eliminated some strange noises at WOT which were probably due to turbulence. Definitely the way to go

Just curious....what did your muffler shop charge you to install and weld????
I just ordered mine from Dr Gas also.

copbait: How does the exhaust sound with the mods you've done?

I have a Gruppe-S Y-pipe installed, and Helix Hi Flow cats waiting to go on once it warms up here, and am contemplating doing a similar reducer instead of an expensive Y-pipe back exhaust.

Any way you could get a sound clip of your car??

I installed the UT Y-Pipe over the weekend.

I ordered the flange (2 hole, 4.5" between hole centers and reducer cone 3" --> 2.5") from Chuck at Dr. Gas, welded, for $35 (+ shipping) as others had mentioned in this post.

I pulled out the mid-pipe and took it along with the reducer cone to a muffler shop.

Definitely call around when looking for someone to weld the reducer cone to your mid-pipe. Two different Midas shops quoted me $58 and $20. Meineke said I would have to make an appointment to do what they considered "custom" work and it would take a few days (WTF?!). I finally found a small private muffler shop that took 10 minutes to do the job for me for $10.

Make sure the shop aligns the flange in the same position as the stock one before they weld it on. The shop chalked the position, but my alignment was still off a bit....fortunately managed to bolt it up with a bit of manipulating.

Here's a sound clip before and after installation of the Y-Pipe...exhaust note sounds deeper. Note my other mods before the Y-pipe install were Motordyne 3/8" spacer, Z-Tube and K&N drop in.

I plan to upgrade to a Fuji exhaust down the road, but for now, I'm happy with this setup!

My welder did the job for $30 without taking anything off the car. Took him 15 minutes to saw off the old piece and weld on the new one.

I'm very happy with the sound. The cats and ypipe really added some low end growl when under hard throttle. While cruising it's about as quiet as stock, with no highway drone at all.

The stock exhaust is supposed to be as free flowing as it gets, so I saw no need to replace it because I am happy with the sound. Great setup!
