Intake Question
Intake Question
So... In december i put in a cold air intake into my 2003 g35 sedan.. I bought it off ebay and it works great.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-RED-IN...b52055&vxp=mtr I know it's cheap and **** and unbranded but wtf ever... it was $40 so i wasn't concerned if it didn't work... Also, the intake is placed as shown in the picture on the ebay thread and does not go under near the headlight of the car like other intakes do...Anyways to my question...
The intake sounds ****ing AMAZING when the engine is cold.. i.e in the mornings or right when I get going after letting the car sit for a while (3 hours or more) but after the engine heats up a bit and the engine heat gauge hits about the middle.. the intake's noise dampens and it not as loud and throaty... So dissapointing :[ I'm sure this happens with all intakes... because they are supposed to be COLD air intakes and not designed to help by taking in engine bay heat... So i was looking around for a heat shield, but before i buy one i wanted to know if it would help at all with the sound of the intake and overall effect... was also thinking of wrapping the actual intake tubing with heat resistant material to keep it cool.. Just thoughts.. Is it worth it to do this? will it actually keep the air "cold" or will it still suck up engine bay heat?

First, i know what the difference is between a f-ing wai and cai it's not that hard at all.. my bad i guess it's technically called a short ram intake.. not a COLD AIR INTAKE that i have.. no need to be an a$$ hole.. Second What the F do you think im trying to do by posting a thread here? Not learn about the intake..? Okayyyyyy
How about answering my question instead of going off topic yeah?

Frankly, I'm surprised these intakes didn't throw a CEL light, since they're extremely cheap.
As for your other questions, I don't think intakes change noise just because your engine warms up and it sucks up warmer air...I would think the reason it sounds nicer when colder because your engine is usually running at a higher RPM when the car just started vs. a car that has been warmed up and running at a lower rpm. The higher RPMS open up the throttle a bit more, so your intake sounds nicer.

I actually know what OP is talking about. The intake is significantly louder on a cold start. I personally think it just has to do with the car being cold. After you warm it up a lil the sound disappears.
If no one believes me, go out and try it one morning. Even the stock intake will sound loud. Start the car up and just get on it. After the car is warmed up the sound of the intake will disappear.
As for the shield. I highly doubt it will make any difference. If you want it to sound louder, you might want to get a different intake tube. Anything besides the rubber material I think personally will baffle the sound. Vs something that is aluminum which would bounce the sound.
