Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

Just installed my Z tube with my already installed Stillen box. All I can say is WOW!!!!! The install was very easy....took about 5 minutes. The sound and pick-up is amazing...especially @ about 4000 rpm. This was actually the first time I had the VDC kick in while making a turn!! Probably the best combination of mods you can get at a reasonable price.

what a coincidence.. i just happen to install my z pipe today also.. i don't have the stillen air box yet, but with the pipe installed, the car definitely growls above 4K.. definitely a worthwhile mod

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

That is interesting! It appears that each mod adds something
unique to the final music. The Stillen by it'self is dyno'd at 11 HP,
add the ?HP of the 350Z tube and we have 11-15 extra HP and
some really great sounds. I like to drive with my windows down
and listen to the intake. I do believe it makes the stock exhaust
sound better also. I looked at the Injun intakes at the Austin 350Z
auto show last weekend. Man, they really do suck air from just
inches above the road. I like the Stillen/350Z duct solution
better.

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

What exactly is different about the Stillen intake vs. the stock intake? It appears to suck air from the same area - the only dif I can see is the round K&N filter.

But with a drop-in K&N and the stock airbox, aren't they pretty much the same?

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

One might think so initially. There is a world of difference
between the stock intake with a K&N drop in filter vs. the
Stillen. Had I known beforehand, I would never have bought
my K&N drop in filter. The difference is night from day.

Does anyone have a pic of the Stillen box with a Z tube?

Yes, go the Technical Modifications forum and go to the
Hyper-grounding thread. I posted some pics of my sedan
with 12 wires. The Stillen box and 350Z tube are in 2 of the
pics. They are on the last 2 pages of the thread.

cliverman,

Here's a picture of my G35 Sedan's engine with the Stillen CAI, 350Z Air Duct and 350Z Engine Cover.

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

Thanks DaveO. Looks great! I just ordered my Stillen yesterday. Z Tube came on Tuesday. Can't wait to install them both at the same time.

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

Don't install both at the same time! Go ahead and put
your new 350Z duct on now. You will definitly notice a
big difference. When the Stillen arrives, you will see exactly
it's effect without the 350Z duct clouding your impressions.
They both add something different.

DaveO, I am seriously not trying to be a smartass, but I was wondering why you decided to put the 350Z engine cover on? To make room for a strut tower brace, or something else?

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

I think im gonna put that 350z engine cover on my coupe. I already removed the stock cover. It seems to me that the stock cover traps heat making the intake hotter. Don't know though.

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

khsonic03,

d3g has already identified why. A cooler collector (plenum) equals more power. I've modified the Z Engine Cover and underhood seals for improved air flow across the collector. Last week I bought a Craftsman infrared thermometer and have been running another unscientific test (according to some G35 PHDs) and have found as much as a 40 F difference between the bare collector and the area under the cover. While not a big surprise, the exterior of the Z Air Duct runs about 10F - 20 F higher than the collector. GSM has already insulted his air duct with wrap on insulation. I will probably insulate my air duct in the near future.

can you tell us how you modified the Z Engine Cover and underhood seals for improved air flow across the collector?

Re: 350Z duct & Stillen Hi-flow

bkchang79,

The 350Z Engine Cover (Ornament in Nissan talk) should fit all G35s with two electric radiator fans. However, if you keep the stock auxiliary air inlet housing, it will rub against the front of the engine cover slightly.

Modifications are necessary if you have an Auto Trans Sedan due to the one engine driven (mechanical) radiator fan.

I trimed the front of the cover for fan clearance and expanded the opening to allow the air from the radiator to flow under the aux air inlet housing and engine cover and across the upper plenum (Collector). The the engine cover to plenum clearance was increased by .075" at the front mounts and .210" at the rear mounts (longer 6mm bolts were needed). If you look closely at the picture above you can see where the engine cover has been cutout.

I also cut and separated the fire wall seal about 5" behind the plenum near the base of the passinger's side windshield wiper to provide an exit point. I know... and I'm still trying to find a way to determine if or when the base of the windshield becomes a high pressure area. Any ideas?

That's what I've done. The theory may be questioned by some, but I enjoyed doing it and it brings about good discussions with good people.
