Steering wheel lights in '04 Coupe- EASY

I spent a nice relaxing couple of days before X-mas playing car. I bought a used 2006 G35 steering wheel off ebay just for the lights. I know this has been discussed before, buy I don'y know if anyone has been sucessfull. I took a few hours to figure things out, but now that I know how to do it, it's really not that difficullt. All you need is the switches, wire and a soldering iron. Check it out.

Congrats, but I think you could have just gotten the '06 steering wheel controls and swap them out. I'm not sure tho. I wish my controls lit up.

I was thinking about doing this just a couple days ago, when I got a loaner sedan that had the lighted buttons. Too bad they don't have the WILLOW color. Wasn't the WILLOW only available for the 03'?

did you lead a wire from the steering controls all the way to the steering column? must be a long wire if you did since the steering wheel has to turn from side to side. I'm trying to figure it out. I was planning to use an 05 clock spring. What did u do?

here's mine..

You don't need to buy a new "clock spring" or hub. What I did was find, by a process of elimnination the harness on the back side of the clock spring hub that suppied the controls for the audio and cruise control. This is the grey connector that plugs in right next to the yellow connector on the lower back side of the hub. You can see it in the first picture. The second picture is of the back side of the hub.

I pulled a dash light lead off of the VDC switch and ran a wire to an empty spot on the grey connector. Then plugged in the grey connector on to the hub, ran a test light to the connector gang on the front side of the hub to see which pin was making my test light go on. Once you know what pin it is you make sure the yellow wire from the steering wheel switches gets to that pin and the pink wire goes to ground. I spliced in a red wire to the pink to use an eyelet connector for the grounding screw.

BTW if you compare an '04 wheel with a later one, you'll notice that all the wires are the same except for the addition of a yellow and pink wire going to both the left and right switches. Againn yellow is power to lights and pink is ground. If you have any questions, let me know. Now that I know how to do it, it would take 1/4 the amount of time.

So to clarify, this mod is for 03 and 04 coupes? 05's and 06's light up stock from the factory.

Great work! The lack of these lights on my '04 is the only thing that really bugs me about the car. How much did the steering wheel run you?

I bought it off of ebay. I think I paid $70.00 shipped. But I ended up using just the switches, my old wheel has a more textured leather that I find easier to grip.

So the lighted switches (silver pieces) can fit on an '03-'04 wheel with no problem?
