trunk opener and power outlet

have any of you with the 2003 model that didn't have the trunk opener and extra power outlet on the passenger side purchase these to add-ons? i know you can get them at infinitihelp.com. if not, are any of you planning on getting these? do you think it'll be worth it and not cause any complications w/ wiring and whatnot?

Re: trunk opener and power outlet

I requested this option be installed when I went in for my 3500 mile checkup and oil change. At the time it wasn't available but the mechanic said it would be soon. Sure enough, it's available now and time for my 7500 mile checkup. I'll be having it installed sometime in the next 2 weeks. I think it would be very worth it - first of all, it would take care of that ridiculous looking plug on the passenger's side (where the lighter should be). Secondly, having an internal trunk release would be a Good Thing. I can't tell you how annoying it is to have the wife walking up to the G with an armful of groceries and I've got to fumble around with the key fob to release the trunk. It'll be far easier with a button to press. Since I'm going to have my dealer install it, I don't anticipate any wiring problems. I'll post when it's done with costs and outcomes.

I'm also considering adding these options. I'm somewhat mechanically inclinded but I went ahead anyway and placed a call to my service rep to see if the installs were available and an estimate. If it's not much more than what infinitihelp.com is selling them for, I might as well have them installed during my next service appointment.

I'd be curious what the dealers are charging for an install. The switch from infinitihelp.com, which isn't supposed to ship until April 15, is about $74, including shipping. The price goes up by $10 after the 15th. They claim that it takes no more than 45 minutes to install, even for a novice. (The trunk opener and power outlet goes for $158.)
Edited by fnt on 03/28/03 07:21 PM.

townsley: Did the service technician mention to you whether installing these items could possibly void the warranty? I only raise this question because when I contacted a dealer about installing them they first said they wouldn't do it and second that installing them would void the warranty since the car didn't come with them originally.

There was no mention of the warranty being voided. In fact, they said they were wondering when kits like this would emerge and were wholly supportive of the whole thing. I didn't ask specifically about warrenty, though. I'll be taking GiGi in this Saturday and will let you know what happens.

Re: trunk opener and power outlet

I asked my dealer about the switch when I called yesterday to make an appointment for my 7,500 mile service. He said he hadn't heard about it, but would check.

Re: trunk opener and power outlet

I've ordered the trunk opener and power outlet kits from infinitihelp.com. They're not expected to arrive until mid April. I'll report back then with any update.

I dont get it! I really cant see how installing this part from INFINITI can void the warrenty.. what about that act which makes them proove the malfunction was caused by the part you added/replaced?

Re: trunk opener and power outlet

I got the ok from Infinitihelp.com to post the link to the instructions posted on their Web site:

http://www.infinitihelp.com/store/kit.htm

If you do decide to do the mod, I highly recommend you purchase the kit from them.
