The less simple answer is you can just replace the LED. To replace the LED, you would have to cut open the tail light, disconnect the old LED, then solder a new LED in its place. For a lot of people that is a lot of work and specialized skill to replace a 50 cent LED.
The other answer is just leave the light with a burnt out rear sidemarker
