Andy_Cliff's Nissan Skyline 350GT progress thread + Kart racing updates

Hey all, im Andy. Im from New Zealand, you know the place? No? 2 or so hours away from Australia. I own a 03 Nissan Skyline 350GT. (JDM G35)

I purchased the car late 2013 with 120,000km's(74500 miles) after selling one of my old cars.

When i got the car, it looked just like this one. Stock as stock goes. The only thing it had was tinted windows.

Since then i have done the following.

- Painted the headlight inners black and sanded/UV protected the front lights.
- Changed the 10000k HIDs it had to 6000k.
- Removed the Skyline & 350GT badges
- Painted the "rear diffuser" plastic
- Painted the grill black to suit the lights
- Put some 19x9.5 Vossen CV3 reps on (temp wheels)
- Remove stock resonator and replaced with a CAI
- Added a HKS Super panel filter
- Made a good quality grounding kit and fitted

What i have ordered for the near future:

- Gloss black roof wrap
- Tanabe 350z springs
- Stock 350z shocks

What i will be ordering shortly:

- Motordyne 5/16 Plenum spacer
- Fujitsubo Catback exhaust
- Gialla style bootlip spoiler or the stock surfboard spoiler
- Wider wheels

These are the wheels i bought:

In the long run i am also going to be doing a +T conversion using the VQ30DET manifolds.

I am going to be using VQ30det manifolds for the build. (Thankful for NZ having access to RHD VQ30DET vehicles).

The manifolds will not be modified. The turbo position is going to remain in the lower position like the VQ25DET & VQ30DET. This will be achievable with the use of a HKS 3037 like the HKS Single Turbo kit. Surprisingly enough, HKS simply used the VQ25/30DET manifolds for their kits Nice!

I found out a fair amount of info on the HKS Single Turbo setup so i plan to base my kit around theirs.

HKS Single Turbo Kit - 350z/G35 approx 270rwkw-300rwkw (360rwhp-400rwhp approx.)

The last thing i want to do is have to do this twice so im going to be spending a little more more money on the turbo and waste gate setup.

Calculating the build costs it looks a little like this. Take into account this is with QUALITY core parts and is an estimate from current prices here in NZ:

VQ30det manifold - $50
HKS 3037 Turbo - $700
Turbosmart OR HKS 60mm wastegate - $500
Intercooler & Piping - $400
Hoses/Fittings - $100
Deatschwerks Injectors - $300
Deatschwerks fuel pump - $155
Oil pan spacer - $180
Oil feed lines/Return lines - $125
Catch can setup - $80
Sparkplugs - $80
AM Radiator - $200
Genuine HKS BOV - $80

Approx. total before tune = $2,950 NZD ($2449 USD)

That is less than what i have seen the Turbonetics kits going for
Not quite pennies but very reasonable for a supposedly reliable and well put together kit.

There are a couple of the things which you could strip back if you were wanting to be on a very tight budget such as the radiator and oil pan spacer etc.

Updates to come.

Cheers

Interesting. If you follow through you will be one of the first to ask and then tell in a long while.

Yeah i haven't seen too many completed DIY turbo setups yet. Hopefully i can help others go in the same direction to save some money

Here is a shot of the rear after the "diffuser" area was painted and the rear badges were removed (minus the Nissan badge)

Not yet sorry. Parked up on an empty section beside work (earthquake section) so i will take one later on.

I am going to be adding another 4 coats of Metalizer to the wheels to lighten them up. A touch too dark atm for my liking.

Thanks fellas :P

I will update the photos asap.
In the meantime, here is a taster of what i will be doing this weekend. Off topic but might be of interest.

I have another practice race meet for Karting before my countries South Island champs.
Heres a taster of what it includes this was another practice day on a hick track. Very dusty and rough.

Suzuki RM125 motor strapped to a circuit track kart setup for Grass/Dirt/Mud racing and the occasional road racing. Approx. 110-130kmh (approx 75mph) on the long straights

Haha come on now, its not that bad! :P Although, in saying that, usually it is not quite that bumpy and rough.

Maybe some of our other racing is better suited

(Needed better gearing as i ran out of pace on the straights at 142kmh)

or

the special stage racing with slicks
