moving to berkeley/oakland
hey guys,
so i'm taking a new job that's in SF and i'd like to live in berkeley. gf goes to law school there and i can take the bart across the bay to SF for my job. i've been scouring craigslist for some leads. so far i've narrowed it down to the following (in order of preference)
rockridge
north berkeley
downtown berkeley
lake merritt
(ashby and the downtown oakland bart stops seem pretty ghetto)
i was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions/tips on areas and neighborhoods. i'm looking for a 2br/1ba place. i want to be no more than a 10-15 minute walk to the bart, since i have a 25-30 minute ride followed by another 20 minute walk to work. i'll be content if the whole trip takes no more than an hour.
i'm finding there's lots of old housing and very little in the way of decent parking options. i'm pretty flexible on budget and am willing to go for a higher end place.
thanks!

yo, man. Downtown Berkeley is good. Rental maybe a little more expensive, but you will like the berkeley environment. Trys to live close to the campus, most part of berkeley is PRETTY ghetto too.

hey ken,
thanks for the tip on downtown. i found something on craigslist that will hopefully work out tho i'm looking way far in advance (moving in jan). i'm hoping for an apartment with a garaged parking spot. it'll have to be my weekend car
thanks! anyone else have some tips?

I dunno, even downtown Berkeley seemed kind of ghetto to me. I prefer Rockridge - it's a straight shot down the street to Cal, and the neighborhood around Rockridge BART is a lot nicer.

I recently moved and one thing that I neglected was stairs. Make sure if you have a lot of stairs they have an elevator. We didn't, and my back is still hurting almost a week later.
i concur with the rockridge area. although a bit far from the bart station, you may want to consider montclair and jack london square.

i've been doing that... only problem is it tells u nothing about the quality of the neighborhood. i'm going to go look at as many places as i can, but people's experience is pretty valuable too
