Moving to Miami
#17
Welcome to S.FLA. If you are looking to live in the calmer side of things, then I recommend Broward. Now, if you are looking for an inner city vibe Miami is where you want to be. Learning Spanish is def an advantage specially if you are working at the port but not a deal breaker... you'll be fine.

We're kindof suburb type of people. We like space, need a garage to work on our cars and our cats like to explore outside. Ironically, big cities don't really appeal to us M-F, only on weekends when it's time to have fun. I'll be working at the seaport processing passengers on cruise ships and international cargo and such. I'd like to be about 30-40 mins away from the hustle and bustle. We have old military buddies in FLL and Sunrise. I'm most likely going to settle on Pembroke Pines because apartments have garages, space and amenities and are within my price range and a reasonable commute to work. I will be working the early morning shift so traffic isn't a big concern. Our move timeframe will be the end of July.

That's wassup! Seems like you have done your homework!! I currently live in West Sunrise and I love it. Pembroke Pines is really nice also. Generally, anywhere in S. Florida, the further West you go the nicer it is. If you are still open for consideration, West Davie is also nice... if you rent a single family home you typically get a lot of land in that area for your money.

I think because its a long distance move, renting in an apartment complex will be easiest until we get down there and get better familiarized with the area. Plus, complexes don't ask for first, last and security like single family homes. I've been advised to stay away from anything near 95, Leisure City, Homestead, Opa Locka, Hialeah and Little Havana. Def open to PP, Davie, Miramar, Aventura and Sunny Isles but one of the major reasons we're moving south is to save money for a house so I want to keep my rent budget as low as possible so towns near the beach are probably out.

I'm sure.. places in florida do ask for security and first months rent upfront in apartment complexes
