I would guess it deadens drivetrain vibration / oscillation.

It's connected directly downstream of the transfer case. Like sleeper said, it probably dampers vibration when the AWD kicks in. Nothing to lose sleep over.

Wierd my '06 6MT doesn't have that? But there's nothing rusty in the area either so I suspect the previous owner removed it or something.
