UTEC....Worth it
hey yall just trying to see if buying a UTEC tuner for my car is worth it as of now....
i have an 06 6mt Coupe and so far my engine mods are... 5/16spacer and MREV2, Injen CAI,and HKS exhaust.... in the near future i plan on getting headers and HFC soon and whenever i work my *** of this summer and before i go off the college i plan on goin FI
So i know i will need a good tuner in the future but should i make the investment now and purchase one
thanks any advice is much appreciated

EU will help tune what you have now, but don't expect a lot. It can also be used with FI and works very well. I used it with my Vortech and am now using it with my Greddy TT. Utec is overrated imo. All piggybacks are essentially the same.

What kind of #'s you looking to put out with your FI setup? If you're going real big, then everyone seems to dump Utec's in favor of F-Con's. You can also wait for Cobb. Heard good stuff about these guys. If money burns a hole in your pocket, get the Utec.

I'm FI, but have had both the GReddy Ultimate and UTEC. The car ran OK with the GReddy, but runs great on the UTEC. As far as boosted cars go the stock ECU still controls everything while not in boost and the UTEC only kicks in at your own determined boost level, etc. The UTEC made my car so much smoother, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The EU has alot of problems that you can search like idle issues, starting, and constant cruise going way lean. Turbo XS over GReddy any day.
As far as for a non-boosted car with the UTEC I think I've read people gaining up to about 15hp with a stock car- so I'm sure your mods will only increase that number.

The results you will see on a tune are 100% based on the current tune of your stock ecu. Some ecu's self-adjust better than others. Some cars will come into a shop running dangerously lean, like 15:1 or more. Some cars come in running rations that would suit a supercharger, like 11:1 or less. In these extreme cases, one might net 20hp or more.
In my case, my ecu was self-adjusted to the point that my a/f's were almost ideal up top. I saw more gains in the midrange than I did up top.
Don't even waste your time with the EU if you are planning on going FI. The EU and the UTEC operate in completely different ways and are very different.
The UTEC will control fuel and spark directly, and doesn't rely on modifying hte MAF voltage (in speed density mode), which the OEM ECU can compensate for. The UTEC can also remove the rev limiter and eliminate the speed limiter.

Anyhow, as it already has been stated, UTEC is worth it if you plan on going FI in the future. As for me, Ill be getting an ECU Reflash (TS) as soon as I have enough bolt-ons.
But I also plan on getting a UTEC in the future, as I will be going FI after graduation college.
