Ok so here is the straight dope on the 2 degree timing advance.
It's gotten way out of proportion. It is not infact a 2 degree timing advance. it is a 2 degree crank trigger advance. Timing on the Nissan is totally driven by multiple factors and is never a static value.
The Titan guys swear by it for one reason and one reason only. Their trucks are shipped with 87 octane tunes from the factory. They generally run 91-93 octane because they think it gives them some better power. The 2 degree static advance is somewhat safe on the trucks because of the higher octane they run, but your cars are shipped with 91 octane tunes, and it just isn't a good idea.
That said, the 2 degree deal is a factory tool for cars that have misaligned crank triggers. The toolset used actually allows for +/- 5 degrees for testing purposes, but that resets when the car is turned off. The +/- 2 degrees is a static ram value that is retained in the ECU till it is changed.
We offer this toolset as part of Cipher for diagnosis, it is not now nor has it ever been a tuning tool. It is a crank trigger alignment tool, and a testing and diagnostic tool. I cannot fathom why people use it, and trust me when we have our Wiki set up on the site I will post more detailed info.
