Yes I am in Texas. I went to Steve Kan in Lewisville. The guy is a tuning genius. He uses a mustang dyno to tune as well so its pretty much the ideal tuning setting. I baselined at 232 hp and 212 tq and after tune was 260 hp and 229 torque.

Nice. What year is your car and is it an revup motor?

Interesting. How much did you have to pay if you dont mind me asking. I was going to take it to Kan but he was asking for $600 and that was a group buy with the dfw folks. So I just took it down to Austin bc Im right around the corner in Waco TX (Baylor student) plus it was only $572 and I got it tuned but only gained a few ponies it put 258whp down baseline and 265whp after the tune. Mods are k&n, z-tube, MD 5/16th iso copper spacer, berk hfc, m2performance y-pipe, and a nismo catback exhaust. The gains werent even that significant in my opinion and from the dyno charts it only gained power from 5.5k up which is not anything to me. Now if there was a gain throughout the power band then I would be happy.

Mind you I have 06 5at and the runs were done on a dynojet.

One thing I've noticed is that often times the places offering super cheap prices don't take the time to do a fully customized dyno tune, they just flash with a generic tune and adjust the full throttle tune. My local shop (also uprev protuner) charges $750 per tune, but each tune is done from scratch and the whole aspect of the powerband is adjusted to suit each car, resulting in a perfectly customized tune for each customer and the maximum gains throughout the range. well worth the extra hundred bucks or so to have someone who's dedicated over 10 years of their life to tuning cars and has personally tuned hundreds of VQ's and seen every possible iteration of performance played out on the dyno focus on my setup for a couple hours and make it as perfect as they can for me. With the cheap door buster specials I'm guessing that you're getting pretty much the same thing as an etune from uprev... This is just based on my knowledge of osiris and having personally witnessed over 20 dyno tunes on G35/37/350z etc

I've read that mustang dyno's allow for a more complete tune. Google it cause I don't remember lol but that is probably why. Steve has also been tuning for like 16 years so he knows his stuff.

I gained power throughout the entire power band. I also gained torque throughout the powerband....I'm sorry mate, you should have tuned with us DFW guys. I was in the group tune, just had to get my block replaced because of OC issue before I tuned, therefore making me tune later than everyone else.

Group tune price was 600

^ +1

Tuning is as much an art as it is a science. It takes not only the skill and experience but the feel for the car and the medium to make it happen, there's a reason people drive hours and hours and fly tuners around the country. I know a couple guys personally with drift cars (mainly 240's with SR's and one lonely FC) that have jumped at the chance to throw down $1000+ to have an OG tuner from Japan fly over and tweek their tune. Its not something everyone can do... and definitely not for the same results

I just bought a 05 G35 coupe a few weeks ago. I'm new to the car scene, but have definitely found myself a new hobby! I've been reading through a ton of these threads to find ideas on what mods to do to my car. So far I've added the K/N drop in and Z-tube. I have a MD 5/16 spacer on the way. I see a lot of conversations about AFR and the car running "lean". I think I understand the general concept, but don't have my head totally wrapped around it. My question is, with these few mods that I'm starting out with, am I risking damage to the motor without getting the car tuned?

I want to add HFCs in the near future and possibly further exhaust mods after that. The OP was advised to get all exhaust mods done before getting the tune. If it takes me 6 months to get all this done, is that too long to go with the motor running lean?

Thanks in advance!

Your car will be fine. Even if your AFR is off enough to throw a code, it should not damage the engine.

Can you explain this more?
- What HFC do you have?
- HFC was louder than stock, but adding a XYZ resonated made it quieter than stock?
- Can you elaborate on smoother? Does it sound "better" than stock? Does it still have a cool, distinct sound like the stock exhaust does?
- Is there any bad smell/exhaust fumes. Think it would pass an emmissions test no problem?

Thanks!

I don't have HFC anymore I have the Motordyne ART pipes, which are pretty much test pipes, but the best imo.

HFC made it louder than stock. The XYZ pipe with resonator made my car quieter than it was when I had the stock y pipe on but not quiter than stock.

The stock exhaust with HFC will have the stock sound amplified. It sounds better with HFC imo because it sounds more aggressive.

There is exhaust fumes with HFC but it isn't that bad. If you decide to get test pipes or the ART pipes then you will definitely be smelling gas on startup or at a stop light. You won't pass an emissions if they did a sniff test but the ART pipes won't throw a code. HFC may need you to do the non-fouler mod to make it not throw codes. Hope this helps!
