How can I determine what version of Nav software my car currently has installed? Also, if you buy the update, can that be used on multiple cars, or can it only be used on the car it was purchased for? Anyone know?

so not really apples to apples.
Garmin GPS---another device, not as cool, one more thing to carry around.
In built maps feature---no extra hassles.

Not really apples to apples either

As far as I can tell--just new maps.

Not that I am supporting Garmin... just an example, as TomTom and the other have similar one...

BUT:
the Nuvi 755T has
True 3d
True better voice command (not limited like on the G35)
True re-route (not the "no new route found" of the G35)
eco friendly routing for better fuel effeciency
Commands that work while in motion
Traffic through XM or FM
Different cars and voices to try
Picture viewer
Bluetooth
MP3 player (actually play mp3 files, not forced to rip like in the G35)
Can be taken to another car if needed
plus a lot more
All for msrp of $399

I love my G35, but really the OEM nav system is way inferior. Even TomTom on my cell phone can do better.

So paying $300 for a map update is really a HUGE rip off. I equate it to the $12 for 24 hours of internet when you go to a hotel. It is outrages but you pay it anyway, because you want internet.

Br2376,

I would go back to the dealer you got your car from and demand they update my map for free. At least the ridiculous service fee they're charging..

I plan to go in and get my 30k maintenance done at the dealer. I was going to do it myself, but going to see if I can get them to throw in the service fee for the maps.

Seems like Infiniti put more thought into charging extra for this update then making a good Navi system.. Great start with the HDD Navi, but they screwed it up by not offering fixes to the complaints and making the update process affordable.

Exclamation

Is there any way to install the update yourself rather than have the dealer do it?

I talked to the dealer. we cannot self update the 07+ HD based Navis. we have to take it in. you first have to buy the update which is 190 bucks and that gives you a serial number. you then take that serial number to the dealer and they use a special cable and an hour of Labor (110 BUCKS!!!) to update it. The service manager told me it really wasnt worth it to do it unless you live in an area that just had new roads built or something. there are a few new places added to the POI but i think you would be better off getting a garmin for 150 bucks that you can just plug into your computer and update.

From what I could figure out, it is actually much simpler then that. It is done via the flash card reader, and probably takes 10 mins of time, with 2 mins of actual labor.

I'm skeptical about this "SPECIAL CABLE".
It can't be that difficult.
A flash card, reader, computer....

Somebody out there must know how to accomplish this....

I have to agree with the Garmin option. I have one for my "other" car and it really is a better system then the G. But who wants another gadget hanging out there? Simply a shame that (what did the nav package cost, over a grand right?) we have to suffer.

I know what you mean. I am not putting another electronic item in my G. I will either pay for the upgrade or just use it as is. At least our navigation interface is far superior to the one in my Honda Pilot (it is awful)

Suffer?!? With the G navigation system? Why would you have to suffer? I have two Garmin's an "older" Nuvi 760 and a fairly new Nuvi 785, and I prefer the G navigation system to either of my Nuvi's... it is almost always more accurate and it is easier to program and SO much easier to hear while driving, plus it mutes the factory stereo when giving directions... what more could you want. The only reason I have the Nuvi's is because I have 3 cars and don't want to put all of my miles on my G... I just wish I could have the G's navigation system in all of my cars.
